How to Create a Continuation Post Effectively on Medium. You Won’t Read This Elsewhere.

Oftentimes, I see many posts that do well but are unable to capitalize additional reads effectively beyond the 24-hour mark.

A Continuation Post or sometimes called part 2 of a post is created when the first one does well and you try to piggyback off that post. Usually, the 2nd post would not exceed the first one in metrics unless you truly understand the value of the 2nd one.

I’ll skip the steps and put the answer straight in your face(in a good way) and see if it makes sense. (there are many pillars of features you can show from a great or above-average post, this average does not have to be all-time but rather relative)

Okay, let’s take my last post is was expected to do well in terms of the topic it is in. (who doesn’t like earnings) The title gives it all away “How I Made $1000 on Medium. A Bit More About Me. A Lot You Can Do.” Did you just see how I inserted my first post? (okay that was not impressive but I would not use an embed link here since it will make the reader click away now and not finish this one)

Next, I’ll address the reason for the 2nd post. The best way to grab the audience’s attention is their interaction with us prior.

Here is a comment from the last post that Brandon Lim not just asked me a few questions but also gave it some thoughts on what he thinks of how he feels towards my previous writing style. (you should be looking for comments like this to create another post like the one I am currently writing about.)

A. It gives the impression that your content is not just good for now but this is a loyal reader that comes back regularly because there is value to it or it is still worth their time supporting.

B. The appearance of a post matters, we love clear intentions that works. By mention someone from the comment section creates authority of its own. You become the owner of the content, which gives you additional power when writing this one. (it does not mean you are the boss, but rather control the narrative of the piece to keep the reader more intact of staying on this post and having the 1st post as a backing of confidence in reading this one first)

C. Creating a post to answer questions from a reader itself is already a powerful way to produce content that other readers might be interested.

The bias effect, everyone has thoughts that turn into ideas that then lead to questions and answers. By showing that you care and giving the additional effort to answer them with fuller attention of yours will affect the reader that reads afterward.

(they care when you care more so the rest can even care more about it)

Now my Answer to the comment, before that I’ll add Boysie Gordon’s questions into the mix as well since this post alone gives the answers to it. (hitting 2 pillars with one stone, why not)

Q1. Why did you start writing on Medium if you had a successful stint?

The short answer is competition, market dynamics, and personal growth path. You see selling physical products has a life cycle of it’s on and usually you are taking value off the profit that is making from each product. Unless you build a brand with an ecosystem around it, it will not last from a profit and longevity standpoint.

We were a major online reseller of a brand that is now public and we sold off the inventories once we saw that they were slowly entering into marketplaces like Amazon.

We did drop-shipping before it was a thing and continue doing it due to the low cost of inventory holding cost. (basally you only buy when you sell) From 2019–2022 we did that, the sales were not as great but the margin was higher than before. I did break some records for selling products at the fastest pace, which I recently a velocity check warning on both eBay and Amazon, got suspended for a month, and managed to get both accounts back through writing my appeal.

Mainly because the business model became more competitive and our life paths were changing as well.

In September 2021 the first baby boy was born. Actually, from the day we found out that my wife got pregnant, which was in late 2020. I have been sticking around and working as a part-time online reseller and a stay-at-home dad until the baby was about 9 months old in June of 2022.

That is when I took a job position in my current 9–6 path. And this has to do with me being unable to fully manage to get more done while around family, my attention would always go to family more than reselling. (maybe I did it for so long just for the $, something has to shift with inflation running hot in the background)

We have been saving since day 1, maybe not in the best investment but we do keep some left in case we need them someday, you can read a bit about it here. (if I invest the profit in the company that I resell products in, I would of at least 10x the money and if I put it on Amazon stock, I would at least 20x) The facts are the trend is your friend, you either ride it one way or another.

Q2. Was it simply just to pursue a new venture and scale again?

My Theory on not just me but in fact many of the readers and writers out there who are entering into the Creator Economy or Digital Renaissance Era.

The Real Reason You and I Are on the Creator Economy Route

  • There is a root cause
  • The foundation of Digital space is more than ready when the accessible tools to create content and AI in the background help to expedite it.
  • The distribution network for information offload is ready like different platforms such as Medium.
  • Now the shit ton of reasons you hate or are unsatisfied with your current job. It might not be the job or even the company that is the issue, the growth path and the excitement of each task competition is just not there.
  • The structure and information flow or the way of doing could be tipping you off and of course, the social aspect drains energy daily that produces unproductive work. (when most are just trying to get by you won’t see many sparks of growth)
  • Now inflation is a big driver in the background to this but not many can interlink the relation.
  • How? It leads to the first asset bubble, then raises the cost of living due to loss of purchasing power in the background. If you raise the price of something the worth of the other things automatically devalues itself.
  • Wage inflation could not keep up with real inflation so the net surplus of people that is left out had to go somewhere. That is why I and many of you have a side hustle called Medium or something else.
  • For the one who gains a remote position with decent pay, is also aware of it and building a backup for personal growth as they see there is a limit to their current career path or see a much bigger pie in the Creator Economy space. For example Seongwon.

Lastly, a Continuation Post should include an earning recap of the 1st post since we are on Medium and everyone likes to know the details or transparency of your work. (so here you go)

And regarding Grammarly, I do agree it sounds better to me and glad Brandon and a few others feel that way too.

Sometimes, I wonder since Grammarly uses AI, and is AI editing making me sound different or it is still me with a different tone?
