How I Improved My Eye Health as a Researcher and an Avid Reader

Six practical steps to better the health of my eyes as I got older

Eye health often slips our minds until problems arise and we realize how precious our vision is. Millions of people worldwide suffer from impaired vision. After my 60s, I was on the brink of becoming one of them.

As a health scientist with a passion for reading and an insatiable curiosity for knowledge, my eyes have always been my most treasured tools. Unfortunately, the more I delved into books and research papers, the more I noticed disturbing changes in my vision.

It was a wake-up call that prompted me to safeguard and enhance my eye health after my 60s. Let me give you a brief background on how I have better eye health in my mid-70s.

In my younger years, I faced severe health challenges due to excessive stress and unhealthy lifestyle choices despite studying health in prestigious science schools. Alongside the broader health implications, my eyesight began to deteriorate.

I reluctantly started wearing glasses. I had a love-hate relationship with those spectacles. They were necessary and helpful, but I wanted to avoid wearing them as much as possible as they caused discomfort.

My turning point came when I decided to change my lifestyle after my 40s, like removing some addictions, primarily through dietary modifications. The impact of these lifestyle interventions on my eye health was nothing short of remarkable.

By getting my diet, workouts, and sleep in check, managing my blood sugar levels, and enhancing my insulin sensitivity, I experienced a significant improvement in my vision. The world seemed bright. It was an incredible feeling, and everyone should strive for it.

I don’t claim to have a genetic advantage. In fact, my family history suggested quite the opposite. However, the improvements in my eye health were a testament to the power of healthier lifestyle choices.

In this personal story, I share my experiences emphasizing the six crucial lifestyle habits that preserved my eyesight and deepened my appreciation.

To simplify my approach, I break down the six healthier lifestyle interventions that became the pillars of my eye health transformation.

1 — Nurturing Neurological Well-being

I discovered that my neurological health was intertwined with my eye health. To this end, I indirectly supported my vision by balancing hormones and neurochemicals through healthier lifestyle interventions listed below and focusing on my brain health.

2 — Nutritional Balance

I made it a point to get enough proteins, healthy fats, especially omega-3s, and essential vitamins and minerals in my diet, such as zinc, magnesium, potassium, and Vitamins A, E, and C. These essential nutrients weren’t just beneficial for my eyes. They also contributed to my overall well-being, especially heart health.

I recently read an inspiring and educative story from a certified nutritional Elin Melaas, which gave me additional perspectives on the importance of nutrition and healthy foods in all aspects of our health.

3 — Time Restricted Eating

Eating my food in a specific window and occasionally fasting for a few days helped me initiate autophagy, a natural mechanism that helps clear damaged cells and proteins in various parts of our eyes. So, time-restricted eating was instrumental in maintaining my eye cell health.

4 — Avoiding Toxins

I became mindful of avoiding toxins and pathogens that could harm my eyes and entire body. I kicked the smoking and alcohol habits to the curb, knowing that it was linked to an increased risk of cataracts and macular degeneration.

5 — The Power of Physical Activity

Regular exercise was my ticket to maintaining healthy blood sugar levels, improving insulin sensitivity, and ensuring optimal blood flow to the eyes — all vital for good eye health. I shared my workout changes in a story. “Marathon Running: The Ups and Downs

6 — Rest and Sleep

Adequate rest and quality sleep are often underestimated contributors to eye health. During sleep, our eyes undergo essential repair and rejuvenation processes, helping to maintain their optimal function.

Lack of sleep can lead to eye strain, dryness, and even more severe issues like glaucoma. Making restful sleep a priority has been instrumental in ensuring my eyes stay resilient despite countless hours spent reading and researching.

Getting adequate rest and restorative sleep significantly improved my eye health and overall well-being. I cannot emphasize the importance of sleep on health and wellness. Here’s how I fixed my sleep issues.

Final Words

In conclusion, I can’t stress enough the importance of eye health. Vision problems affect billions of people worldwide.

These habits can prevent or manage conditions like cataracts, macular degeneration, and glaucoma.

Regular eye check-ups for everyone are a must, even without symptoms.

These habits worked for me, and I believe they can work for you, too. Customize them to fit your lifestyle, and always consult healthcare professionals when needed.
