Hold Me Accountable
New Years Resolutions
Do New Year's resolutions mean anything? do you make them yourself?
Like most people, I always make New Years Resolutions. But do I stick to them? I do try, too; I tend to set goals per quarter and see if I have achieved them after each quarter.
Since this is the first January that I have spent on Medium, I thought I would make public my New Year's resolutions, then come back each quarter and let you know if I have achieved them; some of you may not be interested but I hope some are.
How do I set my resolutions?
I look at where I failed the previous year; we all fail at something, so in my strive to be the best person I can be and help with self-motivation, I need to look at myself first.
I believe that personal development is one of the keys to a happy life; some people are lucky, but most work hard to be a good person,
If I see someone with a great body, I don't think how lucky they are; I think how hard they must have worked to achieve that physic.
If I see someone doing well at sports, I think of all the hours of practice they have put in; if I read a great article, I think of the hours of research or how much work they have put in to be so creative.
So going back to my point, I look at how I have failed, or how I can improve, then look at if I did improve, what would the benefit be? Would it benefit my family? My friends? Or just me.
Resolution one (January to March)
Family time is nothing more precious than this, so I have already booked for the family to go to Peppa Pig World and booked to take my wife away to Moddershall Oaks. I proposed the only time we have been there to her, and she has always wanted to return.
I have also organised a 25-mile helicopter ride and a spa day for my wife and me, so this means we have four things to look forward to already. Compared to last year, we did nothing in the first three months of the year.
Resolution Two (April to June)
These months are a hectic time of year at work, and I usually get up at 6 am and come home between 20:00–21:00; this puts a lot of strain on home life, and I have been more conscious of it.
Whilst we are in for another busy year, and I have taken on more departments due to my promotions, I can be more organised and use my time more effectively at work.
So my goal is to be home no later than 19:30; whilst this is still late, I believe in small steps and being consistent, especially during this busy period.
Resolution Three (July — September)
A resolution for myself, I feel I have hit my level on Medium; I am now averaging around $350 a month, which is very good; however, at the end of July, I will celebrate one year on Medium.
So I intend to become a better writer and expect to earn on average $500 per month at that point. If I am unable to achieve this, I will be extremely disappointed.
Resolution Four (October to December)
Since our children have been born, we have only managed one holiday per year, so, during October, I hope to be enjoying our second holiday as a family, and why not? We all work hard, so we should put aside money to go away and enjoy new experiences together.
Summary
I think dividing my resolutions into small manageable quarters will help me focus on what I want to achieve. I have three for my family and one for myself, which is about the right split.
Being good to myself is essential; we all need balance in life; what are your New year's resolutions? How do you set them?
