Life Lessons from Entrepreneurs
Here’s Why Joseph Closed His Lucrative Candy Factory.
A heartwarming story, giving valuable life lessons to aspiring entrepreneurs

I met Joseph at a health conference over two decades ago, where he stood out among the attendees. Not only had he been awarded for his community contributions as an entrepreneur, but his story touched the hearts of everyone in the audience.
I was immediately drawn to him, finding him approachable, knowledgeable, experienced, and altruistic.
As we talked, Joseph revealed that his wealth had come at a high cost. His father’s candy factory, which had been his inheritance, ultimately caused his father’s death at a young age from a heart attack after suffering from diabetes for many years.
The problem did not stop there. Joseph’s mother also suffered from diabetes, but with lessons learned from his father’s experience, she improved her condition with excellent support from their family doctor and referred metabolic health specialists.
Despite the negative health effects, Joseph enjoyed running the factory for years and making attractive sweets that children and adults loved.
But, as time passed, he began to have troubling dreams about the negative impact of his candy on people’s health.
His father appeared in his dreams, and Joseph knew he had to interpret their meaning.
He intuitively knew that he was on the wrong path and needed to make the necessary adjustment.
In one of the dreams, a wise person asked him to start learning about sugar. At first, he dismissed the suggestion.
After all, he loved sugar, and his customers were happy with his delicious candy varieties. But his dreams kept recurring. He wanted to follow the wise man's advice in his dream but needed to learn how to do it.
The next day he had a more intense and vivid dream of a group of angels taking him to a gigantic library and showing him thousands of books flying in the air and talking to him. He woke up with tremendous inspiration.
He decided to visit the local library, where he had not been since childhood. The friendly librarian welcomed Joseph warmly and made him feel at home.
After a lovely conversation, Joseph asked the librarian to help him with his personal research. The librarian understood his request and goal as she was very knowledgeable about sugar from a health perspective and gave him a valuable reading list from the collection.
The experienced and caring librarian allowed Joseph to borrow ten books and offered Joseph to ask questions as he read the books and articles.
He got hooked on the books as he never knew such an innocent and loved food could be so problematic for the health of 442 million people globally.
Joseph became increasingly horrified by the long-term health consequences of consuming too much sugar, causing suffering and grief to millions of people.
He had no idea that sugar could be so addictive and cause metabolic and mental health issues if consumed in excessive amounts for a prolonged time.
Learning about the sugar paradox and the impact of sugar on insulin fascinated and empowered him. He understood insulin resistance as the cause of metabolic and mental health issues.
Reading the case studies of type II diabetes disturbed him, especially the sight of amputated diabetic patients.
He realized that he could no longer continue to make candy that was harmful to people’s health in his community.
Although it was not an easy decision, he eventually closed the candy factory. He knew many people would lose their jobs, and the community would suffer due to his decision and action.
However, he was happy with his decision as he ultimately chose health over economic gains, recognizing that the impact of his candies on people’s health was far more critical than any monetary value.
As an entrepreneur, Joseph found a great solution to contribute to the economy in his community and the health of people, especially children.
He hired an experienced nutritionist and dietician to create healthy food recipes that can be packaged for various dietary regimes, including plant and animal-based food lovers.
He hired a business manager to set up a new food manufacturing company to produce healthy food for locals.
This unique business in his town grew rapidly as many people became interested in his healthy, convenient, delicious, and affordable products formulated by health professionals.
Furthermore, with the help of the local librarian, he created a small research branch to improve the nutritional value of food and create customized solutions for his growing clients.
Many volunteers joined the initiative as the librarian was an esteemed community member. They started community activities about healthy eating, exercise, and stress management.
With the profit of his new business, Joseph established a charity foundation to promote healthy eating and exercise habits among children and adults.
He experienced a sense of satisfaction and enlightenment. In addition, after stopping to eat candies and consuming healthy food from his own company, his physical and mental health improved.
Joseph’s mental clarity enhanced, and he started feeling younger than before. He also felt more connected with others, giving him more joy and tranquility he hadn’t experienced before.
He realized that he was responsible for using his wealth and influence for the betterment of society, not just for his own gain.
Joseph felt fulfilled knowing that he was making a positive difference in people’s lives and that his legacy would infuse compassion and kindness into his community.
Interestingly, Joseph’s three grown-up kids showed great interest in his food business and decided to dedicate their lives to making it more profitable and sustainable.
After years, Joseph retired from his business and handed it over to his healthy and wise children.
After the celebration of his retirement day, Joseph had a lucid dream of hearing his father telling him that Joseph had achieved his goals and left a legacy behind him. He had an enlightening moment cemented in his memories.
Joseph’s story is a robust reminder of the risks of junk food to health and the importance of prioritizing health over economic gains with an entrepreneurial approach. However, balancing health and the economy is possible with creative thinking.
His decision to close the candy factory and start a new healthy food manufacturing company was not an easy one in the beginning. He found himself out of his comfort zone.
However, this challenging transition ultimately transformed the happiness and fulfillment he valued most. He found true happiness in his risk zone.
Joseph’s journey shows that with care, curiosity to learn, thinking outside of the box, and perseverance, it is possible to positively impact our communities and leave a lasting legacy for them.
When I asked Joseph what lessons we can learn from his enlightening decision and invaluable transformation, he shared his thoughts generously with me.
