Here’s Why I Erased 6 Empty Goals from My Priority List
Removing and replacing these useless goals with meaningful ones improved my creativity, productivity, health, happiness, and mental/emotional well-being.

From the very early ages of my life, I knew the importance of setting goals for success and a better life. So, I found myself forming countless goals passionately that, upon reflection, were utterly empty.
I thought they would make me a better person — happier, healthier, and more fulfilling. But I was wrong about some of them, which I unfold in this story.
Many of these objectives were born from a desire to emulate or even envy some successful and reputable people. However, on a positive note, I converted envy into admiration, which improved my mental well-being on those days.
You might be wondering what exactly constitutes an empty goal.
To me, an empty goal lacks meaningful purpose, fails to promote personal growth or fulfillment, and ultimately results in disappointment, futility, and unhealthy life.
Others may define it differently based on their worldview and philosophy.
In this story, I will briefly introduce my experiences with these hollow aspirations, shedding light on the journey that led me from empty pursuits to goals brimming with purpose and substance, making me happier and healthier.
In hindsight, when I visited the 33rd and 50th centuries in my lucid dreams, my ambitious goals in my younger years, like being one of the richest persons on earth in 2040, looked ridiculous to me.
1 — Amassing Wealth for the Sake of Wealth
The allure of financial abundance seduced me with perceptual security, comfort, and the ability to savor life’s finest pleasures. Yet, I pondered the motivations behind my pursuit of wealth and whether they align with my meaningful intentions.
I dedicated countless hours to work, neglecting my personal relationships and well-being. My goal was to reach a specific financial milestone. I was convinced that achieving it would grant me contentment and happiness.
However, as my bank account accumulated, I grew increasingly hollow. There was no clear purpose driving this relentless pursuit of wealth, and it left me pondering, “What’s the point? Why am I doing this, and for whom?”
I discovered that accumulating wealth without a clear and purposeful direction might lead to a life filled with emptiness. I was amassing possessions merely for the sake of possessing more, a materialistic approach that resulted in a cluttered existence and financial strain. Most significantly, I felt it would give rise to a life lacking purpose and fulfillment.
Takeaway: Empty goals, like the single-minded pursuit of wealth without a deeper purpose, can have many adverse consequences. They may lead to accumulating material possessions devoid of genuine satisfaction, straining relationships, jeopardizing health, and diminishing the sense of fulfillment.
2 — The Pursuit of Fame and Universal Likability Without Purpose
The allure of fame is undeniable for some of us. It can be for recognition, admiration, and validation from the masses. Like many people, I was drawn to the idea of being in the spotlight, basking in the adoration of countless admirers.
I once found myself yearning for recognition and approval from everyone I encountered. In the process, I neglected my personal values and authenticity. I became a people-pleaser, molding myself to fit others’ expectations rather than staying true to my principles.
However, I learned that pursuing fame in and of itself can be a perilous endeavor if it lacks a deeper purpose. I understood that seeking fame without substantive achievements or contributions to society can result in an existence characterized by shallow relationships.
Striving for universal approval can be a double-edged sword. While it may seem attractive on the surface, it can also lead to a life marked by inauthenticity.
It can be tempting to say and do what others want rather than express our genuine thoughts and feelings. This quest can inadvertently compel us to chase popularity at the expense of a fulfilling and authentic existence.
Takeaway: Pursuing fame and the aspiration to be liked by everyone, without substantial achievements or meaningful contributions to society, can lead to a life marked by superficial relationships and a fundamental lack of genuine purpose. The drive to attain universal approval may bring with it the pitfalls of people-pleasing, the sacrifice of personal values, and a shortage of authenticity in our interactions.
3 —Trying to Learn Anything and Becoming the Best at Everything
Learning is a noble aspiration, and life learning is a virtue. There’s nothing inherently wrong with striving to excel. However, when this drive lacks a deeper purpose or fails to align with our true passions and values, it can have unintended consequences.
The aspiration to master everything and become the best at everything, particularly without considering one’s true passions and values, can be a path fraught with peril. Such an all-encompassing pursuit can lead to a life plagued by burnout and a pervasive sense of inadequacy.
Like many people, I craved accomplishment in every area of my life. I was searching under relentless pressure to be the best at everything, even at the expense of my well-being. I found myself consumed by the idea of excelling in every facet of life. I pursued various endeavors, often neglecting to consider whether they truly resonated with my core values and interests. This unfettered pursuit led me to experience burnout.
Takeaway: Striving to be the best at everything can set unrealistic expectations for ourselves. It can create constant pressure to outperform others and ourselves in every domain, leaving little room for self-compassion and personal growth. This, in turn, can give rise to an overwhelming inadequacy when we inevitably fall short in some areas.
4 — Pursuing Perfection and Winning at All Costs
The relentless quest for perfection and the persistent desire to win at all costs, whether it involves an obsessive focus on physical appearance or victory over ethics and integrity, can have detrimental consequences.
Such single-minded pursuits, when detached from deeper meaning and purpose, often lead to a host of issues, from body image struggles to strained relationships and tarnished values.
Suffering from perfection disease in my younger years, I redefined it. Imperfection brought more benefits than elusive perfection. The defined version of perfection (referring to flawless) was not attainable without my body and mind. I accepted my imperfections and strived for excellence.
Nature seems to create us and other beings as imperfect. The human body survives with imperfection. Nature itself is full of flaws. With years of experience fighting perfection, I am confident that perfection is unattainable by human beings.
Takeaway: For competition and achievement, the desire to win can be all-consuming. While striving for success and victory is commendable, it can lead to strained relationships and a tarnished reputation when it eclipses principles of ethics, integrity, and fair play.
5 — Fearing Failure and Seeking Constant Comfort
The desire to avoid failure and the unyielding quest for constant comfort, which involves steering clear of risks and challenges, can hinder personal growth and development. When void of a deeper sense of purpose, these pursuits can result in stagnation, missed opportunities, and a lack of resilience.
The fear of failure is a powerful force that can prevent us from taking essential risks and embracing new challenges. The desire to never experience failure often arises from a need to protect our self-esteem and ego. However, this fear can inhibit personal growth and development when it becomes an obsession.
I’ve grappled with the fear of failure, and at times, it has held me back from pursuing opportunities that could have led to personal and professional growth. I’ve learned that failure is an integral part of the learning process and that without it, we miss out on valuable lessons that shape us into better, more resilient people. I designed my goals around stretch and risk zones, which gave me many benefits.
Takeaways: Seeking constant comfort and avoiding discomfort can be a natural inclination, as we’re drawn to what feels safe and familiar. Yet, when this pursuit takes precedence over pushing our boundaries, it can lead to stagnation. An unending quest for comfort can result in missed opportunities for growth, both personally and professionally.
6 — Overemphasizing Physical Well-Being at the Expense of Mental and Emotional Health
Prioritizing physical well-being over mental and emotional health, particularly when chasing external achievements, can have adverse consequences, like stress, diminished overall quality of life, and burnout.
Conversely, when our goals align with our values, foster personal growth, and bring a sense of purpose and happiness, they contribute to a more satisfying and enriched life.
Pursuing an idealized physical form, such as a perfectly toned body, often takes precedence in today’s image-conscious society. This relentless focus on physical appearance can lead us to neglect our mental and emotional well-being.
I, too, started an adventure to achieve a sculpted physique driven by personal desires. While I succeeded in attaining the physical appearance I sought, I discovered, much like many others, that the intense focus on the body came at the expense of my mental and emotional health.
The societal emphasis on physical appearance can be overwhelming, and the pressure to conform to unattainable beauty standards can persist. The desire to attain physical perfection stems from a desire for validation and acceptance.
However, when this pursuit lacks a deeper purpose or becomes an obsession, it can result in body image issues, low self-esteem, and a warped sense of self-worth.
Takeaway: In contrast to such pursuits, meaningful and fulfilling goals embrace the person's holistic well-being. They align with personal values, foster personal growth, and infuse life with a sense of purpose and happiness. These goals enrich our lives by harmonizing the mental, emotional, and physical aspects of our well-being.
