GPT-4 and the future of work: Will robots take over creative jobs?

A new study examines how GPT-4 might reshape the job market

It has been said over and over again: AI will impact every aspect of our lives. A newly published paper now looks at the impact of GPT-4 on the job market. It is still an early assessment, but creative professionals should take a close look.

Zero exposure

Good news first: the study identifies a range of jobs that show zero exposure to automation by large language models. Typically they are characterized by

  • blue-collar, manual labor,
  • outdoor or non-office environments,
  • lower educational requirements,
  • use of specialized tools or equipment.

These jobs remain relatively resilient to the threat of AI automation, as they rely on skills and abilities that aren’t in the domain of language models:

Highly Exposed

On the other hand, if your job is defined by

  • creative or intellectual labor,
  • office or indoor work
  • high educational requirements

it’s much more likely that it is exposed to being replaced by the unprecedented changes by ChatGPT and the like. The study estimates that 50% of all workers will have 50% or more of their tasks exposed to being replaced by AI.

Conclusion

So is it finally time to be afraid of AI taking our jobs?

Not necessarily.

You should rather be afraid of stagnating in your comfort zone where you expect human creativity to be expressed in the same way.

While I think that humans cannot be taken out of the equation, the very notion of creative work will change dramatically. Human creativity will be on a different level in some areas.

My conclusion after reading the study:

Learn about the tech & how to use the tools
