From “Zero-Shot” To “Chain Of Thought”: Prompt Engineering & Choosing The Right Prompt Types (ChatGPT & GPT-3)

How to Craft Prompts for Maximum Effectiveness

Image by the author & Midjourney

Prompt engineering is the key component of success when it comes to using modern AI conversation tools and language models like ChatGPT and GPT-3. It is the art of crafting a statement or question that returns accurate and valuable results.

Depending on the use case, creating effective prompts can be a tricky process. The challenge is often to use and modify the right type of prompt. Here are the most important ones:

Prompt Types Explained

Zero-Shot Prompt

The most basic and straightforward prompt type there is. What chatGPT and GPT-3 basically do is complete your prompt. That’s the whole magic. So a zero-shot prompt works like a simple question-answer mechanism:

You don’t have to use a question, though. Any initial statement works. The AI model will always try to complete it:

One Shot Prompting

These types of prompts provide the AI model with one example of what you expect the output to be. The basic steps are:

  1. Give a quick explanation of what you need,
  2. add a question-answer pair or a template as an example,

and let the AI take it from there. Here are two examples:

Few Shot Prompting

As you already guessed, these prompts are almost like One-Shot Prompts with the difference that you provide the AI model with more than just one example. The basic steps are:

  1. Give a quick explanation of what you need,
  2. add a few question-answer pairs or templates as an example.

Here are two examples:

Role Prompting

In this case, the context you provide the AI for the completion is not given in the form of examples or templates but in the form of a role. For example:

Chain Of Thought Prompting

This type of prompt not only gives the AI context to use for completion, but also provides a “chain of thought” process that showcases how the correct answer to a question should be reached. This type of prompting elicits reasoning. It even improves arithmetical results, something AI language models struggle with sometimes.

Have a look at this zero-shot prompt. The result is obviously wrong.

By showcasing exactly what type of reasoning we expect from the AI, its completion gets way better:
