Google Data Studio vs. Microsoft Power BI
What is the better Business Intelligence Solution?

Data Analytics and (self-service) Business Intelligence are two topics that are definitely trending in companies right now. But which solution is the best? This time we compare Google Data Studio and Microsoft Power BI.
To compare the two products, I evaluated the following three categories against each other.
Infrastructure & Connectors
As far as connectors are concerned, both systems are well equipped, either via direct connectors and via third-party providers, almost any system can be connected. If a connector is missing, the better way is to use a back-end like Google BigQuery or Azure services like Synapse. Here, the data can be collected in advance in an architecture such as a Data Warehouse or Data Lakehouse and then distributed for the front end.
In terms of infrastructure, both systems are available as SaaS cloud solutions, but Microsoft still offers Power BI as an on-premise solution, which could be a small advantage when it comes to data protection issues.
Graphic Elements
In order to present data correctly, but above all in a way that is easy to understand, it is important to have the right visualizations. Here, both solutions offer many standard visualizations but also more modern ones, as well as those that are especially useful for large data sets. There are also the possibilities of community visualizations and the creation of own diagrams through appropriate programming languages like Python in Power BI or JavaScript in Data Studio [1].
The Price
While Microsoft Power BI has a small advantage in terms of infrastructure due to the on-premise solution and the integration of Python (not only for graphics) compared to Data Studio, Data Studio can convince with the price — because it is free as a SaaS variant. Microsoft also offers an on-premise test version, but for commercial operation in a company, customers usually have to pay for a version.
Summary
So both solutions offer the relatively much. Google’s main advantage is that Data Studio is completely free, while Microsoft Power BI offers a few more functions. However, both tools are well suited for Data Analysis and to enable users in the company to perform self-service BI. Which tool you should use may also depend more on the question of which cloud solution you use, because Data Studio works particularly well with Google Services and the same applies to Power BI and Microsoft or Azure Services.
