Forget Rocket-Fueled…This Account is A Nuclear Blast!

Here’s another fast-growing Medium account to dive into.

Image created by the author in Midjourney.

I recently took a look at Ryan Canady’s account to try to understand why he grew so quickly.

In case you don’t want to spend the four minutes reading that article, I’ll give you the TLDR version. He suggests:

  • Having something unique to say
  • Contributing to the community (very important and where he spends 75% of his time on Medium)
  • Setting an ambitious goal
  • Formatting your stories nicely for a good read ratio

(Of course, there is more to it than just these few tips, and I do recommend reading my full article on Ryan.)

Today I want to look at another account that has risen in the Medium ranks quickly.

If Ryan’s account was rocket-fueled, this one is a nuclear blast.

His name is Carl Jeffers.

Carl started on Medium in November 2023 — just a short few months ago — and already has over 6k followers.

Just taking a quick scroll through his articles, a couple of things stand out to me:

  1. He writes a lot. Every day. Twice a day.
Screenshot taken by the author of this article.

2. In the early days he explored topics like weight lifting, running, and finances, but it looks like he’s settled mostly on writing tips, growing on Medium, and growing a personal brand.

3. A lot of his content is short-form, and I read that he has a schedule of:

  • short-form content 2x
  • short-form content 1x and long-form content 1x

Then he rotates these. One day is all short-form content. The next is a combo. The next is short-form, etc.

Carl’s Key Lessons

After going through some of Carl’s articles, I can pick out some of the key lessons he imparts to help grow your Medium account and make more money. (I also happen to agree with all of these!)

1. Compounding is real.

Your account will start slowly. But as you consistently write and consistently support other writers, your account will grow and the followers (and earnings) begin to snowball.

(This has been true for me too, although not as nuclear.)

2. Volume matters, but so does quality.

I always say quantity matters on Medium. The more you write, the more the algorithm picks your stuff up and puts it “out there.” This has certainly been true for Carl since he writes so much!

But quality matters too. You need to get people on your articles, and you want them to stay as long as possible. (The higher your read ratio, the better!)

Carl’s articles are all extremely high-quality, even if they are short-form. He also uses humor to punch up his writing:

I certainly have plenty of articles that suck dusty butt cheeks, and wow…that is fun to say!

3. Improve your writing.

Carl gives quite a few lessons on improving your writing, including crafting irresistible hooks, enhancing your copy, and picking a side.

Here’s the good news. If you’re writing every day (and especially if you’re writing twice per day) you will naturally improve.

Pick a side.

This is something Carl mentions in a lot of his writing tip articles.

Don’t sit on the fence.

Pick a side and be confident in it.

This is something I’ve started doing. Picking a side is hard for us people-pleasers. We want everyone to like us, and picking a side will push some people away.

But that’s a good thing because you want the right people to follow you.

Your vibe attracts your tribe and all that…

Final Thoughts

Carl Jeffers is a force to be reckoned with on Medium. If you’re one of the few people not following him yet, I highly recommend you do that.

Then once you do that, make sure to go through his articles. They are full of writing tips and tricks that can help you boost your Medium account (and earnings).

Don’t forget to clap, highlight, and comment on his articles too. This helps him get the word out even more!

Now I’m off to find more fast-growing accounts. If you know any in a different niche than writing and Medium growth, I’d love to check them out. Let me know in the comments.
