Does the Lying Plank of the GOP Make Any Common Sense?

I think it’s significant that a jury found Elmer Eyepatch guilty of really bad behavior. Those folks on the jury passed judgment not so much on Elmer’s trespass but more to Elmer’s con about the constitution supporting his non-supported claim of election fraud. Really, it’s an excuse to try to stop Mr. Biden from becoming president. It seems that a number of Congress people and lots and lots of local officials have yet to learn from this all-too-practical example. Honesty, decency and truthfulness are really American ideals which one transgresses at great risk, right, Elmer? I think it’s just plain old common sense. You can’t trust someone who is not honest. You have to be empathetic to the human condition to be decent and that requires a profound honesty with yourself to achieve, but it is quite available. If someone is not truthful about things, there is no way to be in a relationship with that person. Those are just common sense considerations. Did Elmer miss the common sense lesson that parents visit upon their children?
But then I hear a lot of so-called “conservatives” touting the same horse manure that Elmer is going down for. I have a question or two about that issue. I don’t believe that denying the results of an election is an ideal of any conservative plank I’ve ever encountered. But then neither is denying the Holocaust. And I don’t recall conservatives threatening the FBI or the Justice department or ever calling the Capitol Police “woke,” whatever that word means. I’ve never heard of conservatives threatening to cut off aid to our allies like Little Margie from down in Georgia is suggesting. I get that many conservative politicians, like Catholic priests and Southern Baptist ministers, are prone to lust after sexual gratification. That may be an occupational hazard I suppose, but still one does not expect to hear about it on YouTube. But then one does not expect that a conservative Governor would kidnap foreigners in a state other than his and send the kidnapped people to yet another state. And if one did hear of such a preposterous event one would not expect that governor to be considered a favorite to represent conservatism on the world stage. It would not make plain old common sense for such an event to take place. Would it?
I have to wonder who counsels politicians to engage in denying elections, kidnapping people for political recognition, and that tit-for-tat rhetoric is going to be a smart political move? Whoever that is needs a crash course in horse sense 101. Maybe even a bit of child psychology, or maybe just a trip out to the woodshed. But I’m sure that a person who is “getting one over on the libs” is just as “woke” as he or she is accusing the libs of being. Consider the absurdity of this type of carrying on: Mr. DeSantis peppers his public pronouncement with references to how he is not going to ever be “woke.” Now, I can see how people in the villages down there in Florida could be nodding and wondering what that word means. But sooner or later, those folks are going to use the common sense the good lord gave them and realize that kind of talk is demeaning to them and they’re not going to be as forgiving for that insult as Ronnie may think they will be. It’s just common sense to consider that if you attack the Micky and Minnie franchises and do stupid politician tricks you’re not going to stay on the good side of many. Even if those people are more grumpy than Jeff Dunham’s Walter.
People will listen to bullshit for a period of time but sooner or later they’re going to stop and ask what are you doing for me? To accomplish anything in the world of politics, one buys and sells votes with Agreements, not Arguments. This is a problem for politicians who take the “elections are fraudulent” approach. No one can afford to find Agreement with someone who thinks you’re in your seat fraudulently, in Congress, for example. That would be an example of a decided lack of common sense to claim all elections are crooked. The Senate passes bills with a single vote difference as a matter of course. I’ve heard that a house divided against itself can not stand. Maybe someone should give Marge a needlepoint with that idea stitched on it.
Great things can be accomplished with Agreement but nothing is accomplished with Arguments. When people with practical common sense hear only Arguments they eventually tire and move on to something more pleasantly interesting. There’s no point in listening to alarmist diatribes. They make no sense.
All these neo-conservatisms can bitch all they want about Dark Brandon’s policies leading the United States down the path to financial ruin but anyone with any sense at all can see that what he’s doing and has done is not as draconian as the neo-conservatives claim. In fact, the economy is nowhere close to where that bunch claims and neither are gas prices. Supply chains are back to nearly normal if not better than normal. The hold Vlad has on Russia may be waning so the sanctions are working. Besides, the US military is watching all the goings on in Ukraine and undoubtedly learning a great deal about the Russian capabilities. There is also notable movement toward reducing our carbon footprint with renewable energy and electric vehicles.
The question I still have is when did conservatism become synonymous with stupidity. I don’t think that people of the conservative bent are stupid but there is not much clear thought evident in some positions that leading conservatives seem to champion. Conservatives are more aligned with Corporate American than they are with human Americans. Corporations are not actually human and therefore they do not support human activity, they may only support financial actions that profit them. While that makes perfectly good sense financially, it is going to be met with derision from anyone who values common horse sense. It must surely be politically prudent to adhere to the beliefs of one’s constituency on any issue at all. If one applies just some common sense to policy, it is obvious that the most successful approach is to enact policy which allows more than one side to win. Dichotomies in politics should be fatal, and usually are. That’s fortunate or we would all soon be living in a Christian Theocracy. Regular people with just a modicum of common sense will deny that reality and prevent it from growing.
I suspect that if the conservative folks were to return to their roots they would find a great number of people might well Agree with their thinking, but as long as they pursue fairytales and conspiracies, they will not encounter long lasting support. At the end of the day, there is no conservative or liberal thinking, there is only thought and that thought must reflect the reality that we all live in. I don’t think that’s hard to understand. After all, it’s just horse sense and anyone is qualified to practice that. Don’t you think?

Forging Agreement’s newest on-demand workshop is available on Teachable now. Learn more about the ideas that John introduces in his blogs in the Program Theory On-Demand Workshop!
One way to think about how your mind works is to consider it as a biocomputer. It has an operating system and different types of applications and programs that run when called, in similar fashion to a regular computer. The results of this workshop will give you new ways to consider your own beliefs, emotions, feelings and logical thoughts and how you can choose to modify them to meet your own requirements.
The workshop combines a series of on-demand videos with group discussions. Program Theory is taught by John Worthington and Paul Grenci. Contact @forgingagreement on Facebook or Instagram or email [email protected] for more information!
