I was lost in the information deluge of the late 1980s, like a fish in a tsunami. It was back when I was a Ph.D. student, struggling with the ceaseless torrent of new data, statistics, and exciting theories that felt utterly overwhelming and soul-crashing.
This unquenchable thirst for knowledge, the pursuit of every shiny thing within reach, was on the verge of derailing my life. I had no clue of the Zeigarnik Effect pulling the strings so firmly in my psyche.
I sensed that my unrecognized chronic stress and anxiety were slowly eroding my mind, body, and spirit, yet I remained oblivious to the underlying causes lurking in my blind spot.
I was overwhelmed, stressed, and anxious, and my focus waned. I felt like I was losing my grip. That’s when I crossed paths with Dr. Wise.
Dr. Wise was a cognitive psychologist and neuroscientist who was assigned to me as my doctoral research supervisor. In the following years, I affectionately referred to him as my metaphorical guardian angel.

In hindsight, my fundamental issue was my relentless quest for knowledge that forced me from one shiny object to another without resting. I was always eager to acquire new information, assuming it would make me a better person.
However, I neglected the crucial step of processing and assimilating what I learned with rest. It was akin to amassing puzzle pieces without a clear vision of the complete picture.
Once to emphasize, in retrospect, I unearthed the root of my struggle: an insatiable hunger for knowledge that led me from one shiny distraction to the next, never allowing myself a moment’s rest.
