VALUABLE WRITING ADVICE
Damn: Are Stats Really LOW this Month or is it Just Me?
Here’s what I do when my stories start earning less money!

If you’re anything like most writers on Medium; as far as you’re concerned, your stories probably never earn as much money as you would like them to.
But even though we might not be getting paid what we feel we’re worth as writers, some months, our stats and earnings are noticeably much better than other months.
After writing on Medium for close to two years, I’ve come to realize and accept this up and down situation, as it relates to the money I earn.
However, recently, I had to remind myself of how things tend to go, on this writing platform.
For the past few months, my earnings have consistently gone up, or managed to teeter just above the one hundred dollar mark (as well they should, with more than one thousand stories published).
Apparently, I’ve become complacent and lulled into thinking that now, my monthly minimum is locked in.
Wrong!
Without a little more initiative on my part, I’ll be sorely disappointed at the end of March.
Based on my current daily average for the month, my earnings will fall just below the coveted one hundred dollar mark.
That is why I decided to get to work and be proactive in giving my earnings a jolt.
- So just what kind of initiative do I plan to take?
- What can I do to help me be proactive and improve my stats?

What I do when my stories start earning less money
There’s something I do that always works, whenever my stories start earning less money than usual.
This bit of writing advice I’m about to share is nothing new, and I’m sure other longtime Medium writers can tell you the same thing.
So what’s a smart strategy you can use, when your earnings seem to be taking a nosedive?
Write a thought provoking story about Medium, and it doesn’t necessarily have to be about your stats and earnings.
This is a valuable solution that works every time, and can help to jump start getting new eyes on older stories.
To help writers fully appreciate this important writing tip, I published this story some time ago:
Besides discussing other related points about the stories we choose to write about, I discussed the issue of writing stories about Medium.
On two different occasions, I also wrote the following:
All three of the above mentioned stories point out that there is often controversy as to how much or how little we should focus on writing about Medium.
But my conclusion on the matter is that writers should write about whatever they choose to write about, but pay close attention to what is actually working.
I say: Whatever it is — do more…
Both good and bad stats seem to interest Medium readers
I’ve come to notice that whether you’re talking about good stats or bad stats, either way; it seems to be of interest to readers.
We all want to know about impressive stats that we hope to one day achieve. But we also get a jolt and feel some kind of way (good, bad, or ugly), when we read about other writers with low earnings and stats.
That’s what I felt, when I read the story writer Philip Temple wrote, titled: Medium and YOUR statistics — Are They Right? (Updated2).
Just like me, Philip has been noticing some inconsistencies in his stats, that prompted him to write all about it. Others no doubt, share his concerns.
And of course, any stories that seek to help us understand and improve our stats, are of particular interest.
Some Medium related stories get phenomenal responses that can’t be ignored.
From high and low stats, and earnings, to commenting, formatting, and everything in between; Medium related stories tend to excite us all.
For instance:
Laura Blackhurst just recently wrote: Medium Stats Explained: What’s the Difference Between Views, Reads, and Fans?
Judy Derby once wrote: Commenting Makes a Shocking Difference in Your Stats
Chris F once wrote: Here Are My Stats After 6 Months of Writing
In the past, I’ve shared numerous stories of my own, related to Medium stats and earnings. They include:
In one way or another, each one of the above stories is focusing on a theme that is near and dear to a Medium writer’s heart — the topic of making money online, by writing stories on Medium.
And because this is a subject that is always in demand, choosing to write about it is a sure fire way for you to improve your stats and see an increase in your earnings.
Final Thoughts
Some readers may feel like selectively writing about Medium amounts to being a click bait type of gimmick, but I disagree.
Unlike creating a misleading title that is inflated and unrelated to the story, Medium related stories can and should be completely genuine and straight forward.
That’s the beauty of writing about Medium, regardless of the topic or theme.
Everything you choose to discuss will be something relevant to a large number of readers in the community.
Why?
Because no matter who we are, or what we read or write about, we all have ONE thing in common, and that’s:

Doesn’t it make sense that this would be the topic to make readers come running?
Give it a try, and maybe it might help boost your earnings this month.
If all goes well, the story you’re reading now will certainly help to boost mine.
I’ll keep you posted…
