Making Money on Medium: It’s All About the STATS!

How many of us have written stories talking about our stats?

Have you ever stopped to wonder how many writers on Medium have written stories that talk about stats?

I did, once I got the idea in my mind to write the story you’re currently reading. It’s not that I had actual plans to try and take a count of how many writers have covered this topic; it’s just that I was curious.

One story I read recently helped spark the question in my subconscious, mainly because the writer made me laugh, just by writing the story.

The writer talked about the success of their recent story, and how it turned out to be a top earner for them.

Ironically, the story that was making all the money for this writer, was a story in opposition to other writers who choose to discuss their earnings and their stats.

This writer was doing the exact same thing they wanted to see others stop doing on Medium. They did it when they wrote the first story, and again when they wrote the followup story.

Clearly, the irony wasn’t lost on the writer, because they did take a moment to acknowledge the situation. But suddenly, the vibe I began to get from the story was that now, somehow, writing about your stats is not so offensive.

Why did this writer join the rest of us who they previously viewed as offenders for our choice of writing theme?

Because they finally saw what all of us strategic writers on Medium have always recognized. Making money on Medium is all about the stats!

Analyzing and reading your stats give you a clear view of what your earnings are and how that amount was able to accumulate. But this examination also serves another purpose.

For instance, an examination of my stats continually reveal that:

  • People are reading about Medium
  • People are reading about earnings
  • People are reading about STATS!

So me, and other writers like me, have come to appreciate a crucial fact.

It doesn’t matter how much people complain about stats, earnings, or other Medium related stories.

Not only are they still reading these stories, but they’re also writing them.

Final Thoughts

I hesitated on whether or not to mention the writer I spoke about by name. Ordinarily, I’d give them and the title of their story a shout out, but this time I decided against it.

Even though I didn’t really say or do anything to throw shade on them or their story; things could easily go sideways if they read what I wrote and happen to miss my point.

So what exactly is my point? Just this:

  • Any one of us can be drawn in by the desire to share a stat or news about our earnings, whether the amount is on the plus or minus side of things.
  • Any one of us can be pissed off enough, and tempted to write about Medium and complain long enough to blow off a little steam.
  • Any one of us can find it fulfilling to write about the things we learn, discover, or uncover, about writing on the Medium platform.

I always have and I always will, enjoy writing intimate and in-depth stories about my Medium journey.

That includes stories about stats, earnings, successes, failures, and my personal feelings about any and all of it.

Personally, I think it’s awesome that these are not only topics that I enjoy writing, but that these are the stories that often pay me the most.

And just as the stats have shown me up to now, these are obviously the type of stories that people truly want to read.
