In the summer of last year, I watched a movie called The Beach Bum starring Mathew McConaughey. It’s about a drunken poet who has written nothing for years after achieving success, now falling into excess.

I had been in a 30 year writing hiatus, now living on a beach in Ko Lanta, South West Thailand, in between jobs. I found myself inspired to pick up the pen once again.

“And by the way, everything in life is writable about if you have the outgoing guts to do it, and the imagination to improvise. The worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt.” Sylvia Plath.

A short while after this revelation I had travelled to London and was staying with my close teacher friend, Catherine McNicholas and daughter Erin. Catherine had been holding on to all my poetry work for over 20 years, exclaiming.

“You know, I was going to seek publication as a surprise for you before all this shite happened!”

Catherine’s husband Gerry, me best friend, had been fatally stabbed in the heart the previous year. The longest year of our lives.

I took me work back home to Thailand and started editing and writing new works. So, here I am a year later, loving writing again. I hope you enjoy some of this, free verse poetry and a few short stories. Thanks for reading. Always. J. 🙏✨🙏
