Check Out This Insane AR Space Invaders Game for Mobile
Google is celebrating the 45th anniversary of Space Invaders by releasing a mobile AR game.

So, in my past stories, I’ve chatted about all sorts of cool stuff related to augmented reality. You can find the links to those stories at the end of this post.
But today, I want totalk about something specific: Space Invaders! And wait till you hear about this awesome new AR game that’s given the classic game a crazy twist. Let’s dive in!
What is Space Invaders?
Space Invaders, man! Now that’s a classic blast from the past. If you’ve never heard of it, buckle up ’cause I’m gonna take you on a rad journey back to the birth of gaming awesomeness!
So, back in the late ’70s, when disco was groovin’, and flared pants were in style, video games were starting to make some noise. And in 1978, came Space Invaders, created by Tomohiro Nishikado, a Japanese game developer. It hit the arcades like a meteor, becoming a massive hit that revolutionized the gaming scene.
Now, picture this: you’re facing a black screen, and on top of it, you got this squad of pixelated aliens, row after row, descending towards you. Your mission? You’re the last hope for Earth, controlling a little pixelated spaceship at the bottom, armed with a laser cannon.
Your goal is simple, yet challenging — obliterate those alien suckers before they reach the bottom and invade our planet!
As you frantically move your spaceship left and right, dodging enemy fire and strategizing your shots, your heart starts pounding. The tension rises as the aliens get closer and closer to the bottom, and the pace quickens with each wave.
But don’t fret, you got a barricade in front of you, offering some protection. However, beware, ’cause those pesky aliens shoot back, and if they destroy your barricade or, worse, hit your spaceship, you’re toast, my friend.
The best part about Space Invaders was its simplicity and addictiveness. It wasn’t just a game; it was a phenomenon! People would line up at arcades, pockets full of quarters, eager to take down those extraterrestrial pests and claim the highest score. It even became a pop-culture icon, appearing in movies, TV shows, and references all over the place.
Fast forward a few decades, and even though graphics have evolved from those basic pixels, Space Invaders remains a timeless classic. It’s still a go-to choice in retro gaming collections and nostalgia-inducing platforms, reminding us of the pure joy and excitement of those early days of gaming.
An AR Space Invaders game?
Space Invaders is turning 45 this year! Can you believe it? This classic Taito coin-op game took the world by storm and remains one of the most iconic visuals in gaming.
So, Google must have some die-hard Space Invaders fans, because they’re going all out to celebrate this anniversary. They teamed up with Taito and not only created a cool new game but also put together a sweet little history of the series.
But here’s the real kicker — the new game, Space Invaders: World Defense, is an awesome AR game! You know, like Pokemon Go, but way better. AR games might have seemed like a passing fad, but this one feels just right.
Picture it: you’re using your phone to blast those pesky invaders while they float around houses and buildings. It’s a blast, and you can’t help but grin when you see it in action.
Google’s Steven Silva says they’re inviting players from all over to defend the Earth. The invaders spawn from buildings and rooftops, and you’ve got to team up with folks worldwide to save the planet. How cool is that?
Unit9 developed the game, and it’s all about shooting those invaders, taking cover from their fire, and racking up points together. Power-ups, local scoreboards, and even selfie integration — they’ve got it all covered.
Plus, the game adapts to where you are, the time of day, and the local weather. Talk about immersive!
Final Words
You can get the game now on Android and iOS. Look, it might not be revolutionary, but it’s a fantastic tribute to a classic.
And let me tell you, this AR stuff is way more appealing than Apple’s pricey headset vision. I mean, who wants to sit on the couch wearing an expensive gadget?
So, go on, grab your phone, and join the battle against the invaders. Let’s save the world together!
