Cellular Cleaning with a Twist: Autophagy and Mitophagy for Kiddos
Here’s how I recently introduced autophagy and mitophagy to primary school kids in 5 minutes

I love interacting with children as they help me relive my childhood. Besides, biology was my favorite subject which even gave me emotional trauma. Recently, I had an awesome opportunity to share my love for health and science with a group of excellent teachers from a primary school.
As we chatted about different things, one of the teachers challenged me to explain two tricky concepts to their eager grade 5 students after reading my articles on autophagy and mitophagy.
As a tertiary educator, I was a bit nervous about teaching primary school students at first. After all, autophagy and mitophagy are complicated processes that even grown-ups find hard to understand. But I decided to take on the challenge and wrote a simple script that teachers really liked.
Although these concepts are complex, I made them easy and fun to learn using metaphors and analogies. As teachers mentioned, these kids have around five minutes of attention span, so I needed to convey my message in such a short timeframe.
Whether you’re a science fan or just curious about the fantastic world inside you, you’ll be amazed by the wonders of our bodies. After a brief introduction to kids, I’ll also give a summary for adults at the end with some key points to consider.
Hey there, little champions!
Thank you for inviting me to your cool school. Great to meet you all.
Your teachers told me a lot about your interest in science. I heard you love biology and will take this amazing subject in your secondary school classes in a few years.
Today, I will introduce two incredible characters who keep you strong and healthy. They are part of our biology. Are you ready for an awesome and funny adventure inside your amazing bodies?
Your teachers told me that you love superheroes. Who doesn’t? I love them too. Guess what! We have invisible superheroes inside our bodies. They do amazing jobs to keep us healthy, fit, and happy.
First up, let me introduce you to Autophagy Avenger.
Funny enough, autophagy actually means “self-eating” in a language called Greek. But don’t worry. It’s not as scary as it sounds.
It’s more like a helpful friend, not a bad guy. So, no need to be afraid. Autophagy Avenger is here to help keep things neat and tidy in your super cool body.
He is the cleaner inside your cells. He likes to tidy up all the junk and bad stuff that builds up. He’s also like the ultimate recycling machine, giving a whole new meaning to cleaning up your cells.
Autophagy Avenger zooms around your cells with his super-vacuum cleaner, sucking up all the old, broken bits and nasty parts. He’s the ultimate trash collector, ensuring your cells stay shiny and fresh.
We also have his special cousin Mighty Mitophagy Master.
She’s Autophagy Avenger’s best friend and partner in crime.
Do you want to know what she does?
She takes care of those energy factories called mitochondria.
You see, mitochondria are like the little batteries inside your cells. They give you the energy to play, run, and jump around daily.
But sometimes, they can get a bit tired and grumpy. That’s when Mighty Mitophagy Master comes in to save the day.
Mighty Mitophagy Master flies in with her magic broomstick and sweeps away all the cranky and weak mitochondria.
She’s like the mitochondria boss, ensuring only the strong and happy ones stay on the job, giving you all the energy you need to conquer the world.
Now here’s the coolest part.

Autophagy Avenger and Mighty Mitophagy Master work together like cookies and milk. They keep your cells clean and your mitochondria in top shape, ensuring you stay healthy and supercharged.
So how can we help Autophagy Avenger and Mighty Mitophagy Master? I believe you want to boost autophagy and unlock your inner superhero. I will give you two cool tricks.
The first one might make you a little hungry.
What I mean is you can try a fun weekend fasting adventure, like skipping lunch while you’re out having a blast playing games. This will be like a mini-challenge for your bodies to clean up and refresh.
So skipping one meal means giving your body a mini-break from eating for a short time. It’s like a superpower boost for Autophagy Avenger and Mighty Mitophagy Master, making them even more efficient at cleaning up the mess in your cells.
They work better when you get a little hungry. But too much hunger for kids is not good as your body always needs energy from food to make you move and have fun and lots of nutrients like proteins to grow.
Therefore you must always talk to your parents about your cool plans and ensure they’re on board if you want to try skipping a meal.
You know, when you’re skipping a meal, it’s really important to stay hydrated. That means drinking enough water to keep your body happy and healthy. So, keep your water bottles close by, like a trusty sidekick, to ensure you’re feeling your best.
But, if you’re not feeling well, it’s best to save the fasting for another time when you’re feeling your best. So, with some hydration superpowers, you’re all set to give autophagy a friendly tap on the shoulder.
Now, fasting for a whole day or more might not be the best idea for kids like you. But guess what? There’s another fantastic way to let those autophagy superheroes shine in your awesome bodies.
How? Let me fill you in! Even if you’re not fasting, you can still help these superheroes out.
You can become a health superhero simply by having fun and playing outside! Yep, you heard me right!
When you run, jump, and play, your cells and mitochondria get super pumped up and kickstart the amazing autophagy and mitophagy processes.
Exercising by playing outside with your friends is like giving your body a superhero-style workout.
So, always remember, you don’t have to do fasting like grown-ups to activate autophagy and mitophagy. Your energetic and awesome bodies are like natural superheroes.
Just stay active and have a blast. Your cells and mitochondria will be super happy because you care for them.
It’s super important to listen to your parents and caregivers. They know what’s best for you, after all.
And if you’re ever feeling not-so-great, it’s totally okay to take a break from playing and rest until you feel better.
So go on, play, laugh, and move around like the champions you truly are.
You’ve got the incredible power to make your cells and mitochondria dance with happiness. And that’s exactly how you become the ultimate autophagy superhero.
Remember, little superheroes, you can keep your bodies strong and healthy just by being amazing and having fun. Keep shining bright, and let your superhero bodies do their magical work.
Very nice to meet you all, and bye for now.
If you enjoyed this mini lesson for kids, you might want to explore these fantastic tutorials created by my young pals, Jane and Brian. They love biology and psychology and want to be a scientist when they grow up.
And for the adults who are listening, here’s a quick summary of what we learned today
Autophagy is the process of cellular self-cleaning and recycling, where old and damaged parts of the cells are broken down and reused for energy or new cell components.
Mitophagy is a type of autophagy specifically targeting the mitochondria, the organelles that produce energy for the cells. Mitophagy removes dysfunctional or excess mitochondria and maintains mitochondrial quality and quantity.
Autophagy and mitophagy are essential for cellular health and function, as they prevent the accumulation of cellular waste and oxidative stress, which can lead to inflammation, aging, and disease.
Various stimuli, such as fasting, exercise, thermogenesis, certain nutrients, and drugs, can activate autophagy and mitophagy. These stimuli trigger signaling pathways that regulate the expression and activity of autophagy-related genes and proteins.
Fasting is one of the most effective ways to induce autophagy and mitophagy, as it deprives the cells of external nutrients and forces them to rely on their internal resources.
Fasting and careful caloric reduction can benefit health and longevity by improving metabolic health, enhancing immune function, reducing inflammation, and protecting against neurodegeneration.
However, fasting may not be suitable or safe for everyone, especially children, pregnant or breastfeeding women, or people with certain medical conditions needing medications. Therefore, it is always necessary to consult qualified healthcare professionals before starting any fasting regimen.
Exercise is another powerful way to stimulate autophagy and mitophagy, as it increases the energy demand and stress on the cells and mitochondria.
Exercise can also benefit health and fitness, such as improving cardiovascular health, strengthening muscles and bones, boosting mood and cognition, and preventing obesity and diabetes.
Therefore, a combination of fasting and exercise can be a great strategy to optimize autophagy and mitophagy and enhance overall health and well-being.
However, balancing these interventions with adequate nutrition, hydration, rest, and recovery is essential to avoid overexertion or malnutrition.
That’s all for today. Stay tuned for more body and mind adventures with me. Stay curious, and keep being healthy and happy as you are.
