Catapulting ChatGPT to New Heights: The Angry Birds’ Lessons
Disrupting Traditional Industries with AI

Until 2009, few knew about Rovio.
But with the success of Angry Birds, the small Finnish company suddenly became a major player in the mobile gaming industry.
Rovio and its successful mobile game may be a rather extreme example of how the iPhone App Store democratized application development, but it can tell us a lot about the impact ChatGPT could have when its announced third-party plugins are released in the coming weeks.
From Birds to Bots: How To Crash An Industry
Just as the App Store enabled relatively unknown developers to create popular and profitable products, ChatGPT plugins could enable developers to create new, groundbreaking AI applications, spurring innovation and competition in the AI industry.
Angry Birds is an excellent example of how the iPhone App Store has turned the traditional gaming industry on its head: As a casual game with simple gameplay, Angry Birds appealed to a wide range of users, including those who are not considered traditional gamers. We witnessed an unprecedented audience shift and the evolution of mobile gaming into an alternative to console/PC gaming. As a result, established gaming companies have had to adapt to this new gaming landscape.
Similarly, the introduction of ChatGPT plugins — and thus the de facto establishment of an AI app store — could have a profound impact on many traditional industries. By fostering innovation and competition, ChatGPT plugins may likely evolve into highly specialized applications accessible to millions of people. A whole bunch of industries may then need to adapt to the rapidly evolving technological landscape to remain competitive.
Between innovation and ethical dilemmas
Of course, with widespread adoption comes great responsibility.
Let’s look again at Angry Birds: Its success led to much discussion about addictive mobile games, increased screen time, and a decline in social interactions.
Clearly, the social and ethical implications of AI applications are far greater, as they affect many areas of our daily lives at once. That’s why I think the ethical implications of ChatGPT plugins and AI, in general, are increasingly being debated, especially in terms of privacy, security, and potential bias.
However, as ChatGPT prepares to launch its plugin ecosystem, we are about to witness the beginning of a new era of AI technology.
Just as Angry Birds became a symbol of the mobile gaming revolution, ChatGPT has the potential to become the catalyst for a new wave of AI-driven innovation that will transform industries and shape the future.
Indeed, it’s a game-changing journey ahead.
