Summary

South Korea is actively developing prompt engineering as a profession, with plans for educational courses and a focus on language and logic skills over programming expertise.

Abstract

South Korea's Ministry of Science has announced its intention to foster the development of prompt engineering, a field that involves creating and refining prompts to improve AI system outputs. This new role, often referred to as "AI whisperers," is gaining importance across various industries, necessitating the creation of educational resources and courses to train individuals in this skill. The South Korean government and private sector companies like Wrtn Technologies are taking steps to establish prompt engineering as a recognized profession, emphasizing the importance of language and logic skills in applicants. This shift indicates a broader change in the AI industry, where human-AI communication skills are becoming as valuable as technical expertise, potentially leading to new job opportunities.

Opinions

  • The South Korean government recognizes the importance of prompt engineering in enhancing AI capabilities and is considering the establishment of a dedicated curriculum.
  • Wrtn Technologies, an AI startup, values language and logic skills in prompt engineers, suggesting a shift in the skill set required for AI-related roles.
  • The industry may see a rise in jobs that combine technical knowledge with the ability to effectively communicate with AI systems, highlighting the emergence of "AI whisperers."
  • The emphasis on human-AI communication skills could signal a significant transformation in the job market, with a growing demand for professionals skilled in interacting with AI.
  • The government's collaboration with universities and private sector partnerships is seen as a strategic move to ensure the program's effectiveness and relevance in the job market.

What’s A Prompt Engineer?

Prompt engineers are responsible for creating, refining, and testing prompts that enable AI systems to provide more accurate and relevant output. This new profession of “AI whisperers” is increasingly in demand across industries, even if it is not always declared as a distinct job description.

South Korea’s plan to foster prompt engineering

The country’s Ministry of Science is considering establishing a prompt engineering course to pass on methodologies for interacting with generative AI. A government spokesperson summarized the endeavor a week ago as follows:

“We plan to develop a curriculum […] and decide whether the program will be delivered at universities, how long it will take, and whether we will partner with the private sector.”

The private sector is also taking action. One example is Wrtn Technologies, an AI startup from South Korea, which has announced that it will hire prompt engineers immediately and offer competitive salaries. Interestingly, the company places more emphasis on applicants’ language and logic skills than their programming experience.

The Rise of the AI Whisperers

This shift in focus could signal an often anticipated change in the AI industry and job market, with a growing emphasis on human-AI communication skills.

By emphasizing communication skills between humans and machines, the industry could see a shift from purely technical expertise to a more balanced approach that combines technical acumen with the ability to interact meaningfully with AI systems. This could lead to the emergence of new jobs and opportunities for people who are skilled in both areas.
