Balancing Load of ILLUMINATION

Background

ILLUMINATION continues to enhance our collective reading experience through the exemplary contributions by many writers, particularly those of you who prolifically submit multiple stories on a daily basis, and we thank you.

As more and more writers are joining us each day, I request your assistance in overcoming workload manageability issues, which Medium’s arbitrary rules have made it ostensibly insurmountable without your help.

I always encourage writers to write quality stories as much as they can. When I say quality, I refer to the type of stories your readers would be interested in reading. You can check publishing guidelines and publishing checklist.

Until recently, our workload was manageable. We had 42 editors cleared the queue on a timely basis, usually completing daily submissions with 24 hours.

We have now 56 editors but we cannot give them editorial access.

What happened

After 14 Dec, some of the editors had to go on holidays, and we had a limited number of editors to support the workload. I shared our challenges in this story.

I managed to obtain the support of several more editors from our top writers.

When I attempted to add them to the system, it did not work.

We found out that Medium has a limited number of editors per publication to 30.

I removed 24 editors to be able to add just 2 from new editors pool.

We have 30 editors on ILLUMINATION now but 30 editors are not enough to complete submissions on time. They do their best.

To this end, we decided to create a new publication and share the load of ILLUMINATION. I informed and invited the writers to participate in this story.

The new publication is called ILLUMINATION’S MIRROR.

I added all new volunteering editors to ILLUMINATION’S MIRROR.

They are ready and keen to help our writers to publish their stories on time.

We need your actions to make progress.

As the editorial team, we decided to accept only one story per writer for ILLUMINATION in this interim period.

This period depends on Medium’s situation. I understand that there is a bug in the system, and they want to prevent any potential abuse. Therefore, they restricted the number of editors.

I understood from the Helpdesk communication that Medium is working on a new publication system or renovating to a new one. Once Medium allows us limitless editors in our publications, we will go back to our generous service offering for our prolific writers.

We want to continue to support our prolific writers.

Our goal is to keep the ILLUMINATION and ILLUMINATION-Curated queues at manageable levels.

In this interim period, please submit only one story to these publications a day.

You can submit the rest of your stories to ILLUMINATION’S MIRROR.

How to achieve this

The new publication ILLUMINATION’S MIRROR is ready to use.

We added many writers, but there are still many more to be added.

We plan to add the remaining writers when Medium provides us with a CSV file including our all registered writers. This file can allow us to add writers to the new publication much more quickly.

If you don’t have access to ILLUMINATION MIRROR, please leave a comment on this story. I will monitor this story and add provide you writer access.

You may receive some private notes from our editors who are working at the background to expedite the process. Please respond to instructions from editors on your stories in the submission queue.

When you have access to the new publication, you can submit as many stories as you want in a reasonable way. My recommendation is from three to five stories a day.

To supplement, your main stories, you can also submit three short stories per publications you have access.

Conclusions

Until Medium resolves the editorial restrictions on publications, we need to use this load balancing mechanism and the workaround.

There is no number restriction if you are writing about technology as we have enough editors in Technology Hits.
