An Introduction to Sociology

Speaking Truth To Power

Photo by Andre Benz on Unsplash

I wanted to take this time to organize some of my Sociological articles into one place. I teach Sociology. I love it. And I know it can be a lot of information to take in. It can also be confusing if you read something about it, forget about it, go on to something else, and then run into Sociology again and feel like you have to start all over.

Sociology is a passion for me, like poetry. It explores the realities of society, like poetry. Sociology gets to the root issues of social problems, it highlights avenues and pathways to equity and social justice, and it exposes the things that run underneath all that we have come to see and interpret or just go along with as “normal,” or “just the way it is.”

Sociology comes through in my writing and in my activism when I interrogate and highlight power, power dynamics, inequities, and when I seek for justice and equity for oppressed people and for the planet.

Although many want to say that talking about power or inequality is focusing on the negative, I think this is untrue. When we actually see power and oppression and when we actually see systems as what they are, we take this new look at the individuals caught up in them. We can find compassion, we can find understanding. I also like to stress the connections between sociology and empathy. And to really dig into the words we use as a culture — when we talk about oppression, or inequality, prejudice, discrimination, racism, sexism — we need to be clear in our understanding and application of our language if we are going to get to the actual root causes that will then take us to the actual radical solutions.

Here’s a brief Introduction to Sociology via some of my articles:

Race and Social Justice

I have a lot of articles on race, racism, and social justice that draw upon Sociology, personal experience, and hopes and dreams for a better world. Racism is another area of deep misunderstanding. When we get clear on the terms, on the structures, we have a better hope for finding true solutions and better ways of being human, really, in this society.

Climate Change and the Environment

Another area of importance in Sociology and in my poetry is the vital issue of climate change. I have a few articles on it. However this is when I realized that poetry had a bit more power than articles in terms of getting through to people, moving people, creating conversation. These articles did not do so well. My climate change poems do better.

Higher Education, Class, and Teaching

I have some articles about my other job — as an adjunct teacher, as a Sociology instructor, and my life in higher education. And about working in the gig economy on multiple fronts.

Thank you for reading!

Until next time,
