What happened with Overwatch 2 on Steam?
So, guess what? Overwatch 2 has finally made its grand entrance onto the Steam scene! But hey, the initial applause might be a tad muted. I mean, we’re talking about over 124,000 user reviews here, which by the way, totally overshadows the crowd for other recent game releases.
But wait for it… the majority of these reviews are like a raincloud on a parade — they’re “overwhelmingly negative.” Ouch.
Seems like the fans are unloading their frustration cannons straight at Blizzard. You see, Overwatch 2 strutted its stuff on the Battle.net battlefield and consoles nearly a year back, but it’s still under some heavy fire.
The game’s Steam page is practically drowning in those negative vibes, making it the lowest-rated game on Steam, like, ever. Yep, only about 9% of reviewers managed to muster up some positive vibes.
Ah, review-bombing. It’s like the go-to move for disgruntled gamers. But hold your horses, because this tale isn’t just about a bunch of thumbs-down emojis. Daniel Ahmad, who’s like the Sherlock Holmes of video game analysis with a focus on the Asian scene, dropped a bomb of knowledge on Twitter.
So here’s the scoop: more than two-thirds of these steamy reviews are in Chinese. And guess what? Most of them are giving the game a thumbs-down too. It’s like a global chorus of disappointment.
So, here’s the twist: Chinese players aren’t just griping about the usual stuff — you know, like the canceled PvE Hero mode and those pesky microtransactions. Nah, their grumblings run deeper.

But it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. Chinese players are a bit peeved that they’ve lost access to their OG Overwatch 2 accounts. Remember that breakup I mentioned? Yeah, it’s a bitter pill to swallow, having to start all over again and deal with a lack of proper Chinese servers.
Ahmad, the gaming sleuth, summed it up nicely: Overwatch was, and still is, a rockstar in China. But thanks to this rollercoaster of events, emotions have been bottled up tighter than a soda cap, and now they’re exploding like a shaken-up can. It’s like years of pent-up frustration are being unleashed at once.
Simon Zhu, the boss at NetEase, summed it up perfectly, saying the shutdown of Blizzard’s game servers in China was like a heartbreak. He felt for the Chinese players who practically lived and breathed in those digital worlds.

Now, rewind to December 2022. John Hight, the bigwig at World of Warcraft HQ, mentioned that Blizzard was busy playing matchmaker with potential distribution partners in China. But hey, there’s been no official announcement about a new gaming sidekick yet.
Now, here’s a twist in the tale. Despite all the negative vibes floating around, Overwatch 2 still managed to score some brownie points. After its grand Steam debut, the game got cozy with over 75,000 players, making it one of the cool kids on the Steam block. And that’s not all — it’s sashaying its way into Steam’s top-20 played games. Talk about turning the tide, huh?
Final Words
Overwatch 2’s Steam party coincided with the arrival of Season 6, with all the bells and whistles — a fresh support hero named Illari and some spicy PvE story missions to sink your teeth into.
