About Me — Wendy Scott

A mix of Brit & Kiwi, leadership & dating, sci-fi & pets

Author’s photo — me as Poison Ivy

Hi Everyone! My name is Wendy, and I started writing on Medium at the end of November 2020.

From Kent to the North Shore

I’m a Brit, from Kent on the south coast of England, and I have been living in New Zealand for the last 23 years. I live in Auckland, which I love, it’s a city but also has the sea. I came here with my Kiwi husband but I am now divorced. After a long stint of dating, which provides plenty of fodder for my writing, I met my partner, who is also a Brit.

Work

I have been working for nearly forty years. That sounds awful and is rather depressing, but it is true. I do Learning & Development which means writing & delivering training courses. Also, Organisational Development, which is running the performance review system, engagement survey, leadership development, and diversity & inclusion.

Redundancy hit in September, so I am having a go at writing full-time on Medium. I have earned $6 US so far! Luckily, I got a redundancy payout. My goal is to publish one article a day plus a short-form article. I am learning masses each day and enjoying myself enormously.

I write about leadership, diversity & inclusion, personal development, engagement, and dating. I have also written a couple of comic poems.

Family

I have a 21-year-old daughter who is at Auckland University doing a science degree. She loves world-building, designing aliens for her stories, and genetics, so one of my hats is an alien design consultant. I’ve spent many hours giving my opinions on her creations, for example:

Daughter: What about a fire-breathing cat?

Me: Wouldn’t the fur catch alight?

Daughter: It breathes through a chimney on the top of its head.

Me: What if an acorn falls out of a tree and goes down the hole. It would choke.

While all this is going on, my partner, who works in business intelligence, is cheering himself up, by analyzing the latest Covid-19 figures and watching anti-Trump videos. I get hourly reports.

Pets

I have two toy poodles, Woola and Spike. Woola (1 year) is named after the calot in The Princess of Mars series by Edgar Rice Burroughs, who also invented Tarzan. John Carter, the movie, is based on the Mars series.

Spike (5 months) is named after Adorabelle Dearheart in the Terry Pratchett books, as her nickname is Spike. He is the only dog I’ve ever seen who attacks the vacuum cleaner. He is the Jack Reacher of poodles. His latest hobby is stripping the wallpaper off the kitchen wall, after we painted it, ready to sell the house.

Mogwai (1 year) is my daughter’s cat, a stray born in my friend’s garden. She also goes by Barbie because when my daughter calls, ‘Bubby,’ it sounds like Barbie.

We also have Bella The Bichon who is eleven. Sadly, this year we lost Molly, Bella’s sister, and Jake The Cool Cat.

I am thrilled to be on Medium, meeting lots of other writers like you guys. Everyone is so supportive.
