A Little Kindness Makes The World A Better Place
Because it costs nothing, but means everything

Kindness is one of the greatest assets of humanity. Human behaviour is wired in a spectacular way that makes kindness a basic necessity for our continued existence and sustenance.
In a world where people are constantly looking out for themselves and minding the business that pays them, a little act of kindness is a big deal.
Kindness could mean different things to various people because we express ourselves differently. It all depends on how you choose to show it. Whether it’s through empathy, good gesture, thoughtfulness or by being helpful, our modes of expression vary.
The truth about kindness is that it doesn’t have to be a grand gesture because even the little things matter. Being kind could start with something as little as a smile or an encouraging word that lightens up the mood of others.
The sincerity that comes with kindness is what makes it genuine, not a show-off or a pleasing act.
There are several ways to practice kindness. You can be kind to others by:
- Complimenting them;
- Saying “thank you”;
- Lending a helping hand;
- Giving gifts;
- Showing up when needed;
- Putting on a smile on someone’s face;
- Giving as much as you can, when you can;
- Expressing gratitude;
- Applauding others when they win;
- Sending a kind message to someone who needs it;
- Setting up an unplanned surprise;
- By being polite or considerate.
Kindness does not exist in isolation. Other words that can be associated with it are love, care, concern and compassion, courtesy, benevolence, hospitality, tolerance, helpfulness, goodwill and friendliness.
Kindness has its benefits
Being good to others doesn’t just help them, it helps you too.
We are happier when we demonstrate kindness towards others. Helping others feel good brings maximum feeling of satisfaction. It is also a major self-esteem and happiness booster.
Kindness gives peace of mind, a clear conscience and a soothing feeling.
We should be kind to everyone
Kindness isn’t something we should reserve for only close friends and family members. We should be kind to everyone, not minding whether they are close to us or not.
The stranger in the room deserves kindness just as the driver on the road or a fellow housemate. Our colleagues at work also need to enjoy some of our kind acts.
Kindness can impact the lives of others positively, we never know who needs it the most. A kind person would always consider the feelings of others and would always help those in need.
“We rise by lifting others” — Robert Ingersoll
Be kind to yourself too

While being kind to others, don’t forget to be kind to yourself. A bit of self-kindness towards one’s self is a mental health boost because we deserve compassion just like everyone else.
Nobody can love you more than you love yourself.
Many people are good at celebrating others, but show little concern towards themselves. They beat themselves up for even the smallest mistakes.
Kindness begins with you. It means not judging yourself harshly and not holding yourself to impossibly high standards or comparing yourself to others.
On the mercury website, John C. Morgan notes that kindness has two faces: one inside and the other outside. The inner face of kindness requires us to be kind to ourselves. Being kind toward oneself means accepting your shortcomings as part of the process of growth and encouraging yourself to take new steps toward being all you desire to be. The other face is external; it involves accepting the faults of others and treating them as you would wish to be treated.
Be kind and expect nothing in return
Sometimes, it is hard to be kind when it isn’t appreciated or reciprocated, but we should do it anyway. That’s where our true strength of character lies.
Kindness goes deeper than being nice, it is an intentional effort and should be done with love.
“To be kind is good. To be kind without expecting anything in return is better.”- Tariq Ramadan
Give without expecting to receive, because truly, no condition or expectation should be attached to kindness.
