Money
18 Articles in May, How Much Did I earn?
It’s really tough
This is now my 4th month in the Medium partner program. This month, I increased my output significantly. I published 20 articles compared to 15 last month. Yet my earnings are still the same.
But why is it actually tough to earn money on medium? It’s because there is so much competition. You need to be a phenomenal writer in order to stand out from the thousands of new writers that join the platform every day. That’s why only 7% of Medium writers earn more than $100 a month.
Let’s jump into the stats:
Stats

- 3475 views, up 250% from last month’s 1355 views
- 2129 reads, up 254% from last month’s 835 reads
- 314 fans, up 360% from last month’s 87 fans
Pretty large percentage increases, huh?
These are my audience stats:
- 566 followers, up 152 from last month
- 9 email subscribers, up 1 from last month
- 0 referred members 😞

Publications
This month, I worked with a couple of publications and also got accepted into a few new ones. If you want to achieve success on Medium, publications are essential. These are some of them:
- The Shortform. I heard many other writers like Kristina God and Burk talk about this. I only published 1 article with them this month but plan to write many more for them. Your story needs to be shorter than 150 words, which is actually a challenge. They are great if you quickly want to share something brief with the world.
- I also got accepted into BLOCK6, which publishes articles about the blockchain. One of my articles got accepted by them.
Some interesting publications:
- New Writer’s Welcome is actually a great publication run by some fantastic people. Articles about writing tips will get accepted into their publication. The only downside is that they only accept drafts. I always publish my articles and then add a publication to them because I want to be sure that the article gets uploaded on a certain day.
- Start it up, previously known as The Startup, is one of the biggest publications on Medium. Their audience likes to read stories about entrepreneurship.
- Writer’s blokke is also an awesome publication but unfortunately, they don’t accept any new writers. A bummer.
Earnings

A decrease compared to last month’s revenue, but still pretty decent. You might think it’s not a lot, but I think it this way:
I just took 2 person’s $5 subscription and earned it. That’s incredible.

“How criminals launder billions of illegal money”
“7 articles in March, how much did I earn?”
“April — 11 stories, 1,300 views, $13,36”
“This book changed my life and it can do the same for you”
“The mafia that controls the tech world”
This month, my earnings were much more diverse than last month. As you can see, my highest earning story earned $2,5 while last month, my highest earning story earned $5.
In total, I had 35 stories earning me money this month.
I guess that medium can be pretty passive, of my top 5 earning stories, 3 out of the 5 were written last month. Although they earned me money this month, I expect it to decrease substantially in the future.
Some tips
These are some things I would recommend if you are just getting started:
- Join Indigo’s “Read for Read” club. Other people will read your articles and in return, you also need to read theirs. I have seen that on average, it adds around 30 minutes of reading time to your stats. The club currently has 183 members.
- Niche down, this is a tip I have not been following recently. All of my articles were really diverse because my interests are so diverse.
- Upload at the beginning of the week, I have seen that regardless of the topic, articles that are published at the beginning of the week perform the best. I guess that fewer people read articles on the weekend.
Btw, does anyone have tips on how you can grow faster on medium? Let me know.
Final Thoughts
In the month of June, I am planning to release 20 articles. Some of them will be on geopolitics, investing, money, and writing tips. My plan still hasn’t changed:
Write a lot of quality articles.
Don’t focus too much on the titles and stuff like that, if the story is good and valuable to the reader, the earnings will follow. Wish you all good luck!
