13 Awesome Medium Publications You Definitely Should Check Out
A guide for new writers
As a new writer, everything about publications could be a bit overwhelming. When you have just started your Medium journey, you probably don’t have many followers. To reach a bigger audience, it’s a good idea to submit your story to a publication.
In this article, I will take you through the steps of becoming and being a writer for a publication. You will also get a list of 13 terrific publications you definitely should check out.
Becoming and being a writer for a publication
- Do some research and identify which publications you like. Read a lot of stories to find their unique style.
- Look for something like “Write for us” or “Submission Guidelines” as a tab on top of the publication’s main page. In that post, you will find information on how to become a writer for the publication. Once they have added you as a writer, you can submit your stories as a draft to the publication.
- For each publication, read the guidelines and follow them thoroughly. You can see which topics they accept, the story length they want, how they want it to be formatted, etc.
- Write your story. Aim for it to be as reader-friendly and have as good quality as possible. Don’t stress out — just write your best. You will learn by experience.
- Don’t submit a story with grammatical errors. Check your text with Grammarly.
- Finished writing? Don’t hit the green ‘Publish’ button! I’ve learned that lesson by mistake. Press the three dots in the top right corner, besides the ‘Publish’ button, and then ‘Add to publication’. If a publication has added you as a writer, you will find it in the list. Select which publication you want to submit your story to before you press ‘Select and continue.’
- The green button that used to say ‘Publish’ now says ‘Submit.’ Press it, and you get to the next window, where you can add your five tags.
- Add five relevant tags and press ‘Submit to publication,’ as shown in the picture below. Boom — you’re finished! Now is the time to wait and see if your story is accepted. In the meantime, write some more, and connect with other writers. Good luck!
