10 Ways to Achieve Inner Peace.

#3 is to Daydream.

We are all drowning in the noisy world.

There are times where we need to seek a place of solace, a place where we can appreciate the stillness and calmness of life.

They don’t come to us. We have to find them.

Inner peace isn’t just a tagline in Kungfu Panda. I believe that it is a worthwhile pursuit in life because the World we live in is getting too noisy. Everyone is partaking in retail politics, following racial riots, actively commenting on government policies, lamenting on the widening gap between the Haves and Have-Nots as if this is a full-time job.

Consuming many such information that has become readily accessible is tiring.

The best part is that they come to us before we actually seek them out. It gets ever easier to be lost into the current developments of the World and I think that without consciously arresting our attention to focus on ourselves — We will never do.

Focusing on ourselves is important because that is the first step towards Personal Development, and that means being a better person day-on-day.

These are 10 ways that I use to seek Inner Peace on a daily basis to maintain my personal sanity.

  • Hiding behind a Pile of Books.
  • Daily Smartphone Detox.
  • Daydream in Commute.
  • Turn Off the News Channels.
  • Walk in the Park.
  • Stop Counting the Money.
  • Dust, Dirt and Okay to Procrastinate (for today).
  • Nap, When I Need It.
  • Turn Off Social Media Notifications.
  • Stop the Incessant Chit-Chat and Listen to the Person Inside.

I don’t necessarily go through all these steps every single day as there are work and personal commitments that has to be attended to as part of life.

I do use them as a bundle of activities at times and in discrete pockets of availability that I can spare so I can keep in touch with my inner self.

# 1 — Hiding behind a Pile of Books.

I am a bookworm. I love to read and I tend to lose track of time once I have my hands on a book and my eyes on the print. For some reason, it works much better for me when it is on print than it is on screen. Maybe the ultraviolet rays does make a difference in terms of left right eye scrolling.

And I tend to lose track of time when I read. Deep down within me, I know that there is too much the World can offer and I can’t possibly know everything.

So when I have the opportunity to learn from the Masters in print — I do.

Time ceased its relevance.

Most importantly, it takes my mind away from the mundane items in life.

# 2 —Daily Smartphone Detox.

I put my phone away for an hour a day. Please do not assume that it is easy. Partly because of a sales-oriented business, I have to keep up with the latest trends and stay connected with clients and prospects.

Heck, I would even panic if I am taking a dump halfway and not have my smartphone around me.

Yes, it has gone to that extent.

Hence, learning to convince myself that the World wouldn’t collapse without my enthusiastic connectivity with the Digital World via my smartphone is a discipline I have to inculcate.

It would be an hour a day. No smart devices. No interaction.

I would just go for an evening run and learn to enjoy that breeze in the hair.

# 3 — Daydream in Commute.

I have a tendency to want to get something done all the time so I might be writing a social media post or replying to emails while in commute.

Most of the time.

Then, there is “Sometimes”.

When I needed a “getaway” from business and official matters — I daydream in commute. It doesn’t have to be thinking about specific things or not think about specific events.

I would just let my mind go and be in the daze, just watching the scenery whizz by.

Cars, dogs, skaters, billboards, people, traffic lights, buildings.

It helps me to focus once again when I need it, especially when I have a client meeting post-commute.

Daydream, can be a much better tool than endless preparation as we inch closer to presentations and meetings.

For some reason — It just works that way.

# 4 — Turn off the News Channels.

Today’s news carry a catastrophic nature. It feels like every single headline is out to sell doom and promote gloom.

It feeds the negative emotions and grow it.

I don’t appreciate that so I actively limit my exposure to news, mainstream or social media curated ones.

I am more likely to be at peace without an active newsfeed waiting to hijack my attention.

# 5 — A Walk in the Park.

Everything in the park calms me. I think that is the unique feature of Mother Nature. Her package is one that brings a nature sense of calm to our crazy volatile human world predicated upon sensational politicking and elevator analysis of Gross Domestic Product percentages.

# 6 — Stop Counting the Money.

Yup, that’s right. Just stop it.

There is literally no point in counting the money over and over. First, if we don’t spend a single dime, then the string of digits after the dollar sign is likely to be the same day after day.

The next point — which is more likely — is we cannot avoid spending money for basic necessities. We have to eat. We have to commute.

Don’t bother counting. It doesn’t do us any good, especially if we are susceptible to paranoid thinking, such as having too little or having, well, too little.

# 7 — Dust, Dirt and Okay to Procrastinate (for today).

Okay, look.

The apartment could have a strand of hair on the floor, a droplet of water at the edge of the kitchen sink, a 5 degree misalignment of the coffee table measured against imaginary center line carved by the floor tiles in the living room.

My question is …

SO!?

Honestly, just what is the bloody big deal?

Oh come on, take a break.

There is no need to compete for the cleanest abode in the neighbourhood.

Take a chill pill and live a good life.

# 8 — Nap, When I Need It

I am a proponent of napping. Of course, it shouldn’t be too extensive and there is no need to nap daily.

When I am washed out by mid-day, I find that it is more efficient to take a 30 minutes time-out compared to expending high levels of energy just to focus.

A simple re-charge does the trick.

And, it calms me. Emotional volatility is something that the Z-Monster tends to chew away, which is great.

# 9 — Turn Off Social Media Notifications.

Oh yes, please do this.

When we are active on multiple platforms producing contents and interacting with many others from all Walks of Life 24/7, life can get pretty interesting.

And unnecessarily busy.

Especially so when we allow notifications to be enabled.

Imagine having notification banners popping up on our screens from Facebook, Linkedin, Tik Tok, Instagram likes and comments every 3 seconds?

We will go ape-shit.

Turn off the notifications and relax.

At least, we bring control back into our lives without the urge to check our likes every time when the screen of the phone starts flashing.

# 10 — Stop the Incessant Chit-Chat and Listen to the Person Inside.

Conversations siphons our energy.

It takes effort to listen and absorb what the counter party is saying, and then giving a thoughtful response after that.

Imagine having a multi-point conversation. I am not too sure about you, but it always feels like a 4-corner warfare. Sometimes the conversation remains the same topic, sometimes it will take on a life of its own and then it becomes 4 totally different topics in a concurrent conversation.

If we seek inner peace — We have to back away from that.

Instead of listening to others, we have to tune in and listen to the little guy from within.

What is he saying?

  • Is he saying that it is time to have a vacation with ourselves?
  • Is he saying that reading a book beneath a shady tree is what he wants us to do?
  • Is he saying that perhaps the day is beautiful for a swim session?

Tune in.

Because whenever I do — I get peace.

And inner peace comes from within.

It comes from our ability to align our internal and external selves into one harmonious existence.

Simple Conclusion.

Inner peace is important to me because it brings me to a place when I get to focus on myself. I believe that our thinking and behaviours are largely driven and influences by external events and that if we don’t spend time connecting with ourselves, we will lose ourselves into the broaden environment.

We are unique individuals with dreams and goals that are different with the person sitting beside us shoulder to shoulder in the Metro.

Even the genre of news that we consume will be different.

Henceforth, it is time we start respecting ourselves and sense of uniqueness.

How can we do that?

Through seeking and cultivating Inner Peace.
