Your Strengths Are All That Matter
An idea to raise your self-esteem
Have you ever compared yourself with someone in any particular area? I wish you hadn’t. I hope I didn’t too. But the reality is, you may have compared yourself across at least half a dozen areas in your life.
Maybe you have difficulty trying to recall. Let me prompt you if I may. Have you compared yourself in areas of your:
1. Looks
Whether you are a guy or a lady, social media and advertisements influence the way you look at yourself. Your hairstyle, your attire, the brands you carry etc. Some of you may be more concerned about your height, face, or body. In reality, you may not be able to change unless you are prepared to fork out lots of money.
2. Status
Everyone has a different educational background and by some strange combination of career moves, we ended up where we are today. Some believe that where we are is by providence; others believe it is just a random chance. Hence, we have different statuses based on our career or wealth positions. Again, it takes a lot of effort to change your situation. If we could start our life again, we may still end up in a similar position because of our values and behaviour.
3. Gifting
In life, you are gifted. You may be good in writing, music, arts, dance, cooking, physical feats, visualisation, acting, singing, public speaking, managing people, managing money or investments etc. Again, you end up in different places based on some of the giftings relevant to your profession. For example, suppose you are a fund manager who needs to make presentations to the public about investments. A good public speaker will sound more convincing than one who is mediocre.
I could go on and on, telling you that we make so many comparisons, and often it may lead us to a place of depression, with or without our acknowledge.
What can you do?
Focus on your strengths instead of your weaknesses.
Write down your strengths.
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Check if they match the work you are doing. If they do not fit well, it may be good to start planning to move into another industry or work eventually.
Sometimes, we cannot make the change overnight. Instead of improving your weaknesses, find work that will eventually utilise your strengths.
Think about what I have shared. Let me know if you have more ideas.
