Woman’s Life — Female Friendship: Discovering A New Perspective

They make us stronger

Photo by Pablo Nidam on Scopio

“You said you ’n’ me was gonna get out of town and for once just really let our hair down. Well, darlin’, look out ’cause my hair is comin’ down!” — Thelma Dickinson

I’ll admit it. I used to be one of those girls who was only friends with guys. I went to an all-girls school and college, I was sick of being surrounded by girls all the time. So, with time, I made sure things were different. I made a lot of guy friends that I’m still close with today and I genuinely enjoy these friendships, but I soon realized something was missing.

It is normal to question your friendships and what they mean to you.

People usually believe that female friendship is complicated or maybe toxic and you can’t be best friends as you always will try to compete with each other. But last weekend has changed my perspective for good.

Since last few weeks, I’ve spent quality time with a couple of female friends and I realized that there are many things we as a woman can relate to and understand each other without saying much.

Though it’s just a few days but it gave me a lifetime of inspiration and motivation and I am feeling like a new person altogether. That’s why I love my girlfriends. Along the way, I made a new friend too.

Female friendships can do so much. They offer a real sense of support and comradery, especially when you allow yourself to truly trust your friends and lean on one another. They can understand you in the best possible way and can relate to your sentiments and emotions.

The sisterhood is truly sacred

It’s not easy to maintain a friendship or any relationship as you always have many things going on in life. As for anything else in life, friendship needs work and your time too.

From movies to television shows to that girl from your high school who constantly said, “I’m only friends with guys because girls are just too much drama,” there’s a common misconception that female friendships are catty, mean, and petty. Do you remember Mean Girls?

With time, I have come to find a group of strong women that I’m proud to call my close friends — and now that I have them, I literally don’t know how I survived this long without them.

This group of girls defied everything I thought I knew about females — they weren’t judgmental, they weren’t territorial, they weren’t dramatic or shallow.

Quite the contrary, actually. They’re unique, with strong opinions and values, and very accepting. They understood me and welcomed me into the group with open arms. It didn’t take me long to realize that I had finally found a home.

For the longest time, I was not interested in the slightest in making friends with other girls. I actually tried to avoid it. But within a few short months, my entire mindset has been turned around and I now see exactly why female friendships are so important.

I don’t know about you, but I enjoy knowing that within my female friendships, I can openly share things about my body, my mental health, and ask literally any question I have without shame or feeling guilty. I don’t feel the need to hide things or avoid certain topics.

And most importantly, female friendships are important because associating with other strong women makes us stronger in the end. Unfortunately, we live in a world that tries to tear women down, make us the lesser half of society, and discounts our emotions and opinions much too often.

Female friendships are important for every woman. They have the potential to bring so much positive change and happiness to your life.

Whether you have one or two besties or a whole group of friends, you deserve positive, fulfilling exchanges with like-minded women, and you have the power to find them.

So why wait, either it’s an online community or any women group you can socialize with. Reach out to them, I am sure everyone will welcome you with open arms.
