Despite all your efforts, if you are not losing weight, maintaining muscle mass, and having a low mood, possibly your hormones need optimizing.

This story is not about pumping expensive and illegal steroids into our bodies. It is about naturally optimizing and balancing our hormones. However, some people might need hormone replacement therapies for various reasons as determined and supported by professionals.

Some subscribers mention they do everything they learn from health books, videos, or articles, but despite all their effort in lowering calories through eating less and exercising more, they cannot lose fat. Some even feel awful when dieting and doing regular workouts.

When I asked them whether they got checked their hormones, some readers wanted to know where to start, what a hormonal imbalance meant, and what to do to optimize and balance their hormones.

The bodily functions communicate through hormones and neurotransmitters. If this delicate communication process fails, the body faces undesirable consequences. For example, the metabolism might get dented, preventing fat loss, muscle maintenance, and bone density.

This metaphorical communication issue in the human body is known as hormonal imbalance. Many factors can adversely affect hormones and might cause hormonal imbalances.

Typical risk factors for hormonal imbalances are chronic stress, inflammation, nutritional deficiency, sedentary life, thyroid disorders, overexercising, overeating, malnutrition, sleep deprivation, medical conditions, chronic illnesses, pregnancy, menopause, and aging.

Some of these factors can be addressed via healthy lifestyle choices. For example, inadequate or excessive calories can be solved by dietary modifications. However, some of them require medical intervention and support from qualified healthcare professionals.

In this article, I only focus on healthy lifestyle modifications to address hormonal imbalances and to rebalance and optimize them. Those who experience underlying health issues must seek support from qualified healthcare professionals. Hormones are highly complex and interrelated.

To inform you and create awareness, I provide a high-level overview of the primary hormones that affect metabolic processes in the body. However, there are many more hormones that go beyond the scope of this article.

This is not prescriptive and comprehensive content, but it aims to give you an idea of hormonal imbalances and encourage you to seek support from qualified healthcare professionals when needed.

As I studied hormones and neurotransmitters for a long time, one of my goals is to increase the hormonal intelligence of my readers. What you learn in this story can empower you to communicate more effectively with your healthcare consultants.

Summary of Hormones Affecting Fat Loss and Muscle Retention

In this section, I briefly introduce the roles and key points related to ten hormones affecting our metabolism and body composition. I start with insulin, as it is the most impactful hormone for metabolism.

1 — Insulin

Insulin, created by the pancreas, is known as the master hormone for metabolism, as it affects other ones. It has multiple roles as an anabolic hormone.

One of the critical roles of insulin is to manage blood sugar. By controlling your blood sugar, you can improve your insulin profile from a resistance to a sensitivity state.

When the body is insulin sensitive, it can burn fat easier and build muscles quicker. Insulin resistance provides just the opposite results. Therefore we must address insulin resistance.

Metabolic syndrome and type II diabetes are insulin-related conditions. I provided a guiding article titled Three Tips to Eliminate Insulin Resistance and Shrink Waistline.

2 — Glucagon

The pancreas also produces glucagon. This hormone plays a crucial role in regulating blood sugar levels by helping the liver break down glycogen into blood glucose.

Glucagon is essential to maintain stable blood sugar levels to provide energy for our cells. Both insulin and glucagon imbalances are common in people living with type II diabetes.

3 — Adiponectin

Adiponectin is a type of protein, a hormone, and a cell-signaling molecule (adipokine). The ADIPOQ gene encodes it. It has several functions in the body.

As a protein and signaling molecule, this hormone is critical in regulating glucose levels, fatty acids, cells’ response to insulin, and inflammatory activities.

5 — Leptin

Leptin is known as a satiety hormone, as it is signaled when you consume an adequate amount of food. In addition, fat accumulation and utilization are closely related to leptin as it is made up of fat molecules.

Similar to insulin, the body also creates leptin resistance. When you get into a leptin resistance situation, the body loses the effectiveness of this vital hormone, informing satiety.

Leptin is critical because if you cannot control your hunger and keep eating, using and losing fat is almost impossible unless you work out non-stop.

Therefore, fixing leptin resistance with the help of a specialist medical professional can be a valuable approach to fat loss and healthy weight management.

6 — Ghrelin

Ghrelin plays the opposite role of leptin. This hormone makes us feel hungry. When leptin is dominant, ghrelin gets silenced.

Watching the effects of ghrelin is vital during the fat loss period. These hunger effects are not permanent. They come and go. So, you need to watch carefully.

Fat loss becomes tough when reducing calories as ghrelin levels significantly increase, leading to starvation. During starvation, your metabolism slows down, and the leptin levels diminish.

The feeling of hunger comes and goes. However, stress, especially emotional stress, triggers the urge and significantly increases hunger effects.

When you are under constant pressure or sleep-deprived, you might feel starving. So, controlling cortisol can contribute to the control of ghrelin. Therefore I highlighted the importance of mindfulness practices in the next chapters.

4 — Cholecystokinin (CCK)

Even though the CCK hormone has multiple functions, its prominent role is to improve fat digestion by stimulating bile production. Besides, CCK can release enzymes from the pancreas to break down proteins, fats, and carbohydrates.

The second function related to the purpose of my article is the role of CCK in appetite management. CCK can enhance the feeling of fullness while eating. Even though the research is still nascent, it is believed that the role of CCK causes a satiety sensation similar to leptin.

According to this resource published by NIH, “CCK increases pancreatic enzyme output and causes gallbladder contraction. Therefore, the CCK test can help to diagnose biliary tract diseases.”

7 — Growth Hormones

Growth hormones might look less relevant to fat metabolism, but they impact losing fat and gaining lean muscle indirectly. For example, the major growth hormone, somatotropin, is responsible for stimulating the growth of tissues. It also regulates metabolism and body composition.

The primary functions of growth hormones are to build and maintain healthy tissues and repair damaged tissues, especially after an intense workout and injury. Growth hormone such as IGF-1 is essential for building muscle and the regulation of glucose and fat metabolism.

Growth hormones can boost metabolism and increase the chance of fat burning. We don’t have to supplement with growth hormones. We can significantly increase growth hormones with three lifestyle changes.

From my experience, weightlifting, high-intensity interval training, calisthenics, restorative sleep, intermittent fasting, and a ketogenic diet made the most significant impact in naturally increasing growth hormone and defining my body after 50 paradoxically.

8 — Stress Hormones

The primary stress hormones are cortisol and adrenaline. Unlike insulin and growth hormones, stress hormones are catabolic. Cortisol regulates the body’s response to stress. It increases blood sugar levels, boosts energy, and helps the body respond to threats.

Adrenaline (aka epinephrine) helps the body respond to urgent situations. For example, it can increase heart rate, constrict blood vessels, and raise blood flow to the muscles to take quick action during emergencies. Too much adrenalin can cause anxiety, so we need to burn it with exercise.

Like insulin, cortisol plays a critical role in fat metabolism and weight management. When cortisol is elevated in the bloodstream frequently, and for a prolonged time, it indicates that we experience chronic stress.

9 — Melatonin (Sleep Hormone)

This hormone regulating the body’s sleep-wake cycle is less spoken about in weight loss communities. Melatonin plays a critical role in your sleep, immunity, and metabolism.

If you have issues with this hormone, your sleep quality might be affected. Sleep is the most critical factor for fat loss, muscle maintenance, and healthy weight management.

Other hormones also affect sleep quality. For example, too much cortisol cause sleep deprivation, as I explained in this story titled Here’s How Cortisol Plays a Critical Role in Sleep Disturbances.

10 — Sex Hormones

Research suggests that sex hormones in both women and men are closely related to adiposity and fat distribution in the body. For example, as pointed out in this paper, sex hormones play a prominent role in determining healthy body composition.

There are several sex hormones. However, estrogen for women and testosterone for men are the most important to understand. As we age, the level of these hormones significantly drops.

Men with testosterone below the threshold due to testicular failure accumulate belly fat. Therefore, endocrinologists get them started with testosterone replacement therapy. Testosterone also plays a role in maintaining bone density, muscle mass and strength, and red blood cell production.

Estrogen is critical in maintaining bone density and regulating cholesterol levels for women. Estrogen levels fluctuate throughout the menstrual cycle. After menopause, estrogen levels decline substantially. Women can also take hormone replacement therapy for estrogen and progesterone as endocrinologists prescribe.

Practical Tips to Balance and Optimize Hormones

In this section, I provide some practical tips under six headings covering various lifestyle factors.

Hormonal imbalances have severe health impacts and implications therefore, you need to correct them timely.

For example, excessive insulin causes metabolic diseases such as type II diabetes. Elevated cortisol can intoxicate the body and lead to obesity and mental disorders. Too little testosterone in men can cause sexual dysfunction. Too little or too much estrogen in women causes disorders.

Here are six steps summarizing key points for your awareness.

1 — Get hormones checked regularly.

Apart from subjective feelings, the best way to know the hormonal issues is to get them checked via blood, urine, or saliva tests, usually analyzed by endocrinologists. You need a referral from your family doctor to see this type of specialist.

Many blood tests for various hormones are available as a public service through the internet. Besides, your family doctors might directly order some generic ones covered by Medicare. But, granular ones require input from endocrinologists, and they might not be covered by health insurance.

If you feel discomfort, pain, emotional disturbance, mood fluctuations, and difficulty in losing fat and gaining muscle, your hormones might be imbalanced. Thus, seeking support from healthcare professionals is necessary.

2 — Solve nutritional deficiencies and customize diet.

Both macronutrients such as protein, fat, and carbohydrates and micronutrients like vitamins and minerals play a critical role in hormonal balance. The number of nutrients also matters. For example, too much or too little can be problematic.

As energy sources, glucose and fat molecules play a crucial role in balancing hormones. Even though sugar is critical, too much of it also causes metabolic issues such as insulin resistance, type II diabetes, and fatty liver disease. Sugar metabolism is controlled by insulin and glucagon.

Several hormones require consuming healthy fats. For example, some hormones, like leptin, need fat molecules to function correctly. Some hormones need cholesterol. As this topic is confusing to the public, I explained the cholesterol paradox in an article for clarity.

Cholesterol is required not only for men’s sex hormones. It is also essential for women. For example, women need cholesterol to create steroid hormones like estrogen, progesterone, and vitamin D.

When estrogen levels go down after menopause, cholesterol significantly increases. As this article from Harvard Medical School highlights, “Going through menopause often results in lipid and cholesterol changes for the worse.”

3— Move the body joyfully and regularly

Like diet, exercise is also an individual matter. It depends on multiple factors, such as age, sex, fitness levels, and health conditions. For example, the exercise requirements for a teenage boy and a senior woman are entirely different.

Too much or too little exercise can be problematic. For example, excessive and prolonged workouts such as cardio can significantly increase stress and hence elevate cortisol levels.

Likewise, a sedentary life can lead to serious health issues. Literature indicates that 150 minutes of weekly exercise can lower the risks of some major diseases, such as cancers.

Intense and short-burst workouts can increase growth hormone and testosterone in men and contribute to losing visceral fat and building muscles. Resistance training is not exclusive to men. Women can do it and benefit from it too.

The key points for exercise are customizing workouts based on our needs and fitness levels, performing them regularly, and enjoying them as a hobby. Boring workouts might not be sustainable.

4 — Solve sleep issues and create an effective sleep regimen.

Getting restorative sleep is essential for the balance of our hormones. In fact, sleep is controlled by hormones such as melatonin and cortisol. So if these hormones do not work optimally at the right times, we can experience sleep and wakefulness issues.

Sleep deprivation can lead to chronic stress and inflammation. A stressed and inflamed body might experience hormonal imbalance. Cortisol increases enormously after a night of no sleep, and growth hormones can decrease, putting the body in a stressful and metabolically disadvantaged position.

Thus, having sleep hygiene and improving sleep quality might be an excellent health investment in improving hormonal balance. The critical points are monitoring sleep, creating sleep hygiene, lowering stress, and seeking support from qualified professionals when required.

5 — Act mindfully and meditate daily.

Studies indicate that after mindfulness practices and meditation sessions, cortisol levels significantly diminish. In addition, elevated cortisol also adversely affects insulin, growth hormone, and sex hormones.

Mindfulness practices and meditation can balance hormones as they help manage stress. Literature indicates that chronic stress is a significant factor in hormonal imbalance.

In addition, oxidative stress leads to chronic inflammation, adversely affecting hormones and making undesirable epigenetic effects.

So, by acting mindfully and meditating daily, you can lower stress and balance your hormones, primarily cortisol and adrenalin, which also affect other hormones like insulin and glucagon.

6 — Improve relationships and social connections.

Even though relationships are seen as mental constructs, they can also affect our biology. The quality of our relationships with others might impact the balance of hormones and neurotransmitters.

When we have happy relationships, the body produces more good feel hormones. The opposite is also true.

Emotional stress can adversely impact hormones and cause imbalances. For example, suppressed emotions and traumatic memories can disrupt the activities of some hormones and cause DNA damage. So stress affects us at a genetic level.

Improving our relationships and social connections with emotional intelligence can contribute to our hormonal intelligence. When we connect with others meaningfully, we feel pleasant emotions, our mood enhances, we can stop eating emotionally, and we have more motivation to exercise.
