And how to find high-potential tags to boost your views, reads, and followers.

Wait a minute. This is not another story with a long list of tags.
No!
I won’t give you high-follower and low-competition tags. And I won’t suggest you create a cheat sheet of some sort. This is outdated.
WHY?
If I give you the exact tags to copy-paste, or if you will
- never learn why exactly use these tags
- how to use them, i.e. which ones to choose for your different stories
It’s a process, you need to know the Why's and the How’s. This is the only way you:
- know what you’re doing and
- can become better at it.
The WHY
It’s all about the SEO, but not Google. It’s Medium’s internal SEO.
Tags are the topics. When readers search for content they use keywords, which Medium groups into topics. Then based on who you follow and what you read, you have topic recommendations on the home page of Medium, on your right, under the Staff Picks section:

Choose a topic and you get what to read, and who to follow. Medium will recommend writers and stories based on topics.
The takeaway: if you use the right tags consistently, and if you have good engagement, you have a good chance to pop into the recommendations.
This will boost your views, reads, and followers.
But, Yana, this is not easy, especially with high competition topics, you say. True!
That’s exactly why to use low-follower tags! You have much higher chances!
But, Yana, this way my stories will never get exposure, you say. True!
That’s exactly why you also need high-follower tags!
What about competition? I believe this doesn’t matter so much. Read my article to understand why:
An example
This is a low-follower tag. See the recommended writers — lots of them have low followers too!
If you get into this list, you’re in the V.I.P. section of Medium!

By the way, this proves my theroy for the competition. This tag has much more competition than followers, but still new authors are in the top5 recommendation.
The HOW
That’s easy. Two steps.
- Choose a mix of tags with low and high followers.
- Have your tags mentioned in your story, in this order of importance:
- SEO settings
- title
- subtitle
- intro
- body
No need to mention them everywhere. Just keep in mind that if you have it in the title, you’ve got highest chances to rank.
Another example
Take this story for example. I choose these tags:
