Which Writing Style Earns More? My First Month on Medium.

It wasn’t what I thought, either!

All writing styles can do well on medium as long as you make your writing about the reader, not yourself.

Readers (including us!) are selfish. They don’t care about the writer’s life, they care about what they can learn that will benefit their own lives.

So what works?

If you tell a personal story, tell it in a way that will resonate with the reader and show them insight about themselves.

It’s nothing personal. People read for enjoyment or to gain knowledge. They don’t want to hear about your talk with your cousin unless it can teach them something about their own life.

My first month on Medium I practiced writing in four different styles:

  • A personal, friendly, girl-next-door type of writing style
  • The research paper style with cited sources
  • A combination of both (personal, but with some research)
  • Humor

Here were the results!

Top earners:

Humor (three articles)

Combination (two articles)

Research (one article)

Personal (one article)

Lowest earners:

Humor (one article)

Personal (three articles)

Combination (three articles)

Research (one article)

I’m not going to post links to these articles since it won’t be beneficial for you to see the unsuccessful articles.

My very lowest earner was an article that I wrote like a research paper with very few personal stories.

I didn’t do any others of that style since they didn’t earn any money. I switched to adding research to personal-sounding articles and those did much better (the combination ones).

However, the short humor stories seemed to take off the best. My guess is that the lowest-earning articles ended up that way because I didn’t write eye-catching titles rather than writing subpar content.
