Summary

The missionary position remains the most popular sexual position among Americans, with a preference for traditional and comforting forms of intimacy during times of stress, as revealed by a survey conducted by Adam & Eve.

Abstract

According to a survey by the sex toy company Adam & Eve, the missionary position is favored by 23 percent of Americans, with doggy style and cowgirl positions following. The survey, which included 1,000 participants, indicates a tendency for people to prefer familiar and comforting sexual positions during periods of stress or uncertainty. This preference for traditional positions is consistent with findings from a similar survey conducted by Adam & Eve a decade earlier. Dr. Jenni Skyler, the company's resident sexologist, suggests that the choice of sexual positions is influenced by the level of stress couples experience, with many opting for the familiarity and face-to-face intimacy of the missionary position over more complex or distant positions.

Opinions

  • Dr. Jenni Skyler opines that during stressful times, people gravitate towards familiar sexual positions for comfort, with the missionary position being particularly favored for its face-to-face intimacy.
  • The survey results reflect a collective preference for traditional positions, with missionary topping the list both currently and ten years ago.
  • The article implies that the simplicity and emotional connection of the missionary position make it a perennial favorite, even in a society that often values novelty and variety in sexual experiences.
  • The preference for certain positions, such as missionary, doggy style, and cowgirl, is seen as a way for couples to find comfort and maintain a sense of closeness amidst external stressors.

What are people’s favorite sexual positions? Although you may think people favor something exotic and kinky, according to a survey conducted by Adam & Eve, the all-time favorite sexual position is as traditional as vanilla ice cream: missionary.

“During periods of stress or uncertainty, many people tend to cling to what they know.”

In a survey of 1,000 Americans, the sex toy company found 23 percent of people reported that missionary was their favorite position. Other preferences that made the list were doggy style (18 percent), cowgirl (12 percent), reverse cowgirl (4 percent), and spooning (2 percent).

“It’s no surprise that most couples prefer missionary….”

According to Adam & Eve’s resident sexologist Dr. Jenni Skyler, sex position preferences often have more to do with the stress couples are experiencing, rather than the position itself.

“During periods of stress or uncertainty, many people tend to cling to what they know,” Skyler said. “They find comfort in the tried and true, and that corresponds to lovemaking as well. It’s no surprise that most couples prefer missionary — which allows face-to-face intimacy — over more acrobatic or distant positions.”

Adam & Eve conducted this sexual position survey ten years ago and back then, missionary also topped the list with 32 percent of respondents saying it was their all-time favorite. Other positions were doggy style (23 percent), cowgirl (22 percent), spooning (6 percent), and reverse cowgirl (4 percent).
