What Snow White is Really About:

The Child-Sacrificing Devil and the Christ Child

Snow White has been touched on by psychologists as well as the great Eddie Ejbair, who has written a series on its hidden meanings. It has come to me to consider the Jungian themes present with respect to Biblical allusions present throughout. Of course, one need use Grimm’s version to ensure the psychological material has not been Disneyfied away.

Snow White is a divine child — anything you cannot kill despite three perfectly good assassination methods is either divine or Rasputin. Her being attacked in her early youth by a jealous, toxic semi-deity harkens the fate of many deities/heroes, such as Hercules: a theme repeated with Harry Potter, scarred in his crib.

The evil queen believes the child has been killed and then eats what she believes is Snow White’s heart. That’s some dark shamanic belief: by eating a key portion of an important being’s body, that being’s specialness will then be absorbed. Hence animal penises are often eaten in cultures with the belief that they embody masculinity or potency. Snow White’s potency is her love, hence the loveless queen seeks to transmute it into power, just as Maui steals Te Fiti’s heart for his own power.

A cruel being asks for the sacrifice of a child, with the child escaping at the last moment, and a substitute animal stumbling into surrogacy. This is precisely played out in Yahweh’s seeking Abraham’s sacrifice of Isaac, only to accept a ram at the last moment. So the Bible is with us, suggesting this evil queen is more than human.

Yet the queen remains tortured by knowledge — that she is no longer the fairest of all. This harkens Milton’s depiction of Lucifer in Paradise Lost. There, Lucifer refuses to bow to humans upon God’s command, and so, falls to Hell, paralleling Man’s own Fall. By refusing to see the divinity in humans, Lucifer ceased seeing his own angelic nature. This of course anticipates humanity’s exact same Fall for the exact same reason.

We start to see the queen as a kind of demon: child sacrifice, eating of the heart, compared to Yahweh in the worst way, and parallels Lucifer. This stepmother is the Devil.

She then attempts to kill Snow White three times. This suggests Peter’s three betrayals of Jesus, further polarizing Snow White as Jesus to the queen’s Devil. That Snow White dies and resurrects cements her as a partial Christ figure.

The final assassination attempt is the feeding of an apple, which of course harkens the Fruit of the Tree of Knowledge. Snow White initially resists the fruit as taboo based on instructions from her caretakers, the dwarves, just as Eve did. But she is persuaded, and her innocence is indelibly gone. Once again, the queen plays the homologous role of the Devil.

Through this transformation, Eve becomes a woman, and Snow White, who was a child at the start of the tale, becomes a prince’s bride. This shall ultimately elevate her to the status of a queen, and so the evil queen must die — and so she does.

Resurrected royalty suggests Christ as the ‘King of Kings’, bringing about a rising consciousness. Snow White is after all cared for by dwarves who dig for gold. None of them attempts to experience her sexually, suggesting the purity of their love for her. As seekers of gold, they would be identified with alchemists who, in Medieval Europe, were seeking the gold that represented Christ Consciousness. The gold they were seeking was Snow White.
