In a couple of previous stories, I spoke about gaming news relating to the wildly popular game called Destiny 2. In this post, I will explain why Destiny 2 is so popular and what it is.

What is Destiny 2?

Destiny 2 is a first-person shooter game developed by Bungie and published by Activision. It is the sequel to Destiny, which was released in 2014. Destiny 2 was released in 2017 for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows.

The game is set in a fictional universe where players take on the role of a Guardian, a protector of humanity, and fight against various enemy races to save the last city on Earth.

The gameplay of Destiny 2 is primarily focused on shooting and looting. Players can choose from different classes, each with their own unique abilities and playstyle.

The three classes are Titan, Hunter, and Warlock. Titans are heavily armored and excel in close combat, Hunters are agile and specialize in ranged combat, and Warlocks are masters of magic and support their teams with powerful abilities.

The game is divided into various modes: campaign, strikes, raids, and PvP (player versus player).

The campaign is a story-driven mode where players go on a quest to defeat the game’s main antagonist, Dominus Ghaul, who has taken control of the Traveler. This powerful entity grants Guardians their abilities.

Strikes are cooperative missions that can be completed with two other players, while raids are more challenging missions that require a team of six players to complete.

PvP modes include various game types, such as Control, where teams compete to capture and hold points on a map, and Survival, where players have limited lives and must eliminate the opposing team to win.

One of the unique aspects of Destiny 2 is its loot system. Players earn loot by completing activities and defeating enemies. The loot can range from weapons and armor to consumables and crafting materials.

Players can also earn powerful exotic items with unique abilities that are highly sought after by players. The loot system is designed to keep players engaged and returning to the game to earn new and better gear.

Destiny 2 also has a social component, with players able to join clans and play together with friends or other players they meet online.

Clans can earn rewards by completing activities together, and players can join matchmaking for various activities if they don’t have an entire team of friends to play with.

Since its initial release, the game has received numerous updates and expansions, including new story content, weapons, armor, and game modes. One of the major expansions, Forsaken, introduced a new storyline and location, the Tangled Shore, and a new raid, Last Wish.

Another expansion, Beyond Light, introduced a new location, Europa, and a new subclass for each class.

Destiny 2 has received generally positive reviews from critics and players. The game’s graphics and gameplay have been praised, as well as its story and lore. However, some players have criticized the game’s loot system and lack of endgame content.

Why is Destiny 2 so popular?

The game also has a robust social space, the Tower, where players can interact with each other and vendors to purchase new gear or upgrade existing gear.

Deep lore

Destiny 2 is also popular because of its deep lore. The game’s world is richly detailed, with a complex backstory and mythology that players can explore through the game’s story missions, lore tabs, and collectibles.

The game’s universe is full of exciting characters, factions, and locations, which players can learn more about through the game’s grimoire cards and various in-game activities.

The game’s story has also been expanded through various expansions and updates, introducing new characters, storylines, and locations.

If you’re unfamiliar with the term lore, I've explained it in a recent post which you can view here.

Updates and expansions

Destiny 2’s popularity can also be attributed to its constant updates and expansions. Bungie, the game’s developer, has released numerous updates and expansions since the game’s initial release, each of which has introduced new story content, weapons, armor, and game modes.

These updates and expansions keep the game fresh and engaging for players and offer new challenges and experiences for players to enjoy.
