This article is for all of you writers out there: Whether you’re a local writer, blogger, poet, or student. Creative criticism is a tool of literary analysis that relies upon the reader’s own responses and personal interpretations to uncover hidden meanings or messages in work. What does this mean? Well, it means that anyone can make creative criticism at any level they like. It doesn’t matter if you’re versed in literature or not; as long as you’re able to think critically about the work (and have a little bit of creativity) You can take part in creative criticism by using your imagination and being more engaged with what you are reading/looking at. But let’s first break down these steps: A) Awareness B) Ask for Yourself C) Use your imagination and creativity to create meaning and send it back to the author. The purpose of creative criticism is to find the hidden meaning in art and send it back to the author so that he/she can see what wasn’t there before. It also allows readers to be more aware of the messages they are receiving.
“Dear Tree, I’m a poet. I am a lover of the passions. I am a seeker of depth and deathlessness. Myself I see as a tree — full of branches, full of roots — but with only one trunk, one self-center.
Your poetry awoke me to my love-self again — to the rootedness that is me and the branches that are also me. Before you, I was two trees: one tree contemplating from earth groundedness; another tree living in sky winged fantasy. Now thanks to you, I feel like one again: fully rooted and fully sky-bound at once! Your poetry taught me how to become both rooted and airborne at once. It taught me how to be both “stuck” and “free” — the paradoxical paradox of life.
What’s more, your poetry can inspire even those like myself who live far off in the suburbs of America to find their way out into the world again. I admire your artistry. Thank you for sharing your art with us. Yours truly,
Q: What is creative criticism? A: Creative criticism is a tool of literary analysis that relies upon the reader’s own responses and personal interpretations to uncover hidden meanings or messages in work. It was born from the idea that there are five ways of seeing reality: artistically, physiologically, psychologically, intellectually, and mystically. Through these five ways of seeing reality, it is believed that one can find new meaning in anything one chooses to look at. Creative criticism has evolved to be a literary tool that allows readers to interpret art in their own way by using their imagination and creativity instead of relying on the critic’s opinion of what the piece of writing should mean. The goal of creative criticism is for readers to think critically about the work while using their imagination and creativity, therefore being more engaged.
Q: What is the purpose of creative criticism? A: The purpose of creative criticism is to find the hidden meaning in art and send it back to the author so that he/she can see what wasn’t there before. It also allows readers to be more aware of the messages they are receiving. Creative criticism goes above and beyond just telling someone else what they think by using literary elements or analyzing a piece on its own.
Q: How is creative criticism different from simple criticism? A: Creative criticism goes above and beyond telling someone else what they think. It can be very insightful and meaningful. However, it does not replace simple criticism. Simple criticism means the author what they did wrong, while creative criticism makes you think to figure out why that person did what they did.
Q: What are the steps of creative criticism? A: The steps of creative criticism are elementary yet highly effective. The first step is to be aware of what it is you are reading/looking at. The second step is to ask yourself, what makes you feel the way you do, or why did you react to it? The third step is to use your own imagination and create your own meaning. Finally, the last step is to send it back to the author.
Q: What are some examples of creative criticism? A: Some examples of creative criticism:
