Review of “Fast Pace”
the poem by Rark Writes
Rark Writes, You did very well capturing the sense of chaos and the meaning of harmony that a city can create. Your use of detail, rhythm, and metaphors help to give this poem its depth. I think lines 20–21 are my favorite, “Completely chaotic to the participants / To them, chaos is harmony.” As I read these lines, I thought about how people actually find order in disorder. There is a sense of freedom in being part of something chaotic and not following the rules because you do not have to — you just create your own limitations as an individual. It’s refreshing to see someone talk about how they no longer feel forced to follow other people’s wishes or expectations — they create their own life and are free from the constraints of society. For example, in line 23, you say, “I guess no one really knows the original big picture anymore.” In a way, it seems like you are saying that society has lost its way and people no longer know what is going on. They just do the bare minimum without thinking about what’s going on around them because they are just trying to live their lives and fit into a more giant puzzle that may not be for them.
You say, “Step on that train, so you don’t have to wait for the next one / Just go where the big city takes you.” It seems like a theme that’s very common these days because people want a quick fix and to get it over with.
I felt like the author captured more of the true meaning of the city and what we find in it by giving us an understanding of how people try to make their own order and chaos within society. I think this poem shows us that we do not have to conform to society, because as an individual, you have the power to create your own life.
