The Power of Poetry

Review of ‘Judging my Self-Esteem’

the poem by Gabriel Mihalcea

Gabriel Mihalcea

I am writing you today to talk about how I interpret your poem and how it might be helpful to me.

One of the most fascinating aspects of your poem is how you explore guilt and remorse through a very personal lens. You explore this through a flashback sequence where you see someone that may be yourself, or maybe somebody else — you’re not sure exactly what happened that night. This sequence is also paralleled by another character on their deathbed, with somebody beside them — this person could represent somebody who was hurt and somebody who injured others. As this character realizes their life is in danger, they are also allowed to try to understand their actions — but as you said, it’s a “fragile thread” that they’re hanging from.

I think that your ability to capture both of these images — your own memory sequence as well as the character on the deathbed — is compelling. I love how you have drawn from your own memories and experiences and created a narrative that explores this idea of guilt and remorse through a personal lens.

The victim speaks to us in these verses, but our ears are also tuned to what he has to say. This poem’s content demands deep thought and heart-rending contemplation because the author has taken his readers into uncomfortable territory for contemporary sensibilities. Our world may be more prosperous for acknowledging that the dark side of victimizing behavior does not always stay huddled in one place where it can be seen with absolute clarity. This poem reveals a man’s descent into self-destructive behaviors, and it is an entreaty for recognition, an acknowledgment that our actions may not only taint others’ lives but also ruin our own; or, even worse, contaminate those precious around us like children or close companions.”

sincerely
