The Power of Poetry

Review of “Use Their Labels As Your Secret Weapon”

the poem by I. Trudie Palmer

I. Trudie Palmer, the author of this poem, refers to her writing merely as a name that has been put on her for the sake of the world; she is simply trying to understand it rather than conforming to society’s ideas. This poem contains allusions to different areas of life: science, education, spirituality, and even sports. These allusions allow us to better understand who the author is and why society has shied away from understanding her for so long. This poem is about individuality and most importantly, the freedom to be who we want to be.

This poem is about a voice. It is the voice of a person who has fought for freedom. Yet, she still feels constrained by society’s expectations. She compares her words to being shackled by the labels of others, but are they? I would argue that it is the author who puts herself in this position. She claims that society is her cage and stamps it as something specific:

“AD — HD — LMNOP Bi — Dy — Sci-Fi”

These words do not define who she is, and according to this poem, it is the author who has invented these labels for herself. Putting herself in these labels does not give her freedom; they prevent her from expressing who she is. However, when the author writes new understanding she is not referring to herself in a negative light but describing that poetry allows her to speak in her way. In poem, the author uses words that do not fit into a specific category or genre. In this poem, the author talks about being an “S” and an ordinary person. In this poem, the author is a top athlete who achieves a great goal. The author has “her own way” of expressing herself, and it is up to the reader to decide what that means.

This poem is fascinating in many aspects. It incorporates many different themes throughout its lines and thus could be an extremely complex poem. However, that is not the case. The author discusses various topics but does it to make sense and ties everything together nicely. This poem could be described as a poem written by someone who feels trapped by life and society’s expectations but at the same time feels free to be herself. The author took his life experiences and turned them into a beautiful work that everyone can connect to. In this sense, this poem is relatable to everyone.

I. Trudie Palmer, thank you for being with us in the “The Power of Poetry”, thank you for being in the heart.

“Poetry reviews in “The Power of Poetry” are not like regular reviews. Literary criticism is supposed to be more complex, thoughtful, and creative because great poetry is being reviewed, which is very different from articles or movies. “The Power of Poetry” editors use various forms of literary criticism to review the poet’s work“ Dariusz Gross #DATAsculptor
