The Power of Poetry
Review of “Masochist”
the poem by Paul Leonidou

The voice in this poem is both beautiful and disturbing. There is an onslaught of the shocking and beautiful, a juxtaposition of mundane details and heart-breaking emotions. Pain is often too much to bear, but the author conveys it so well with such astonishing imagery that I cannot help but feel what they feel.
When you speak of your pain, I do not want to turn away from it; instead I am drawn in like a moth to a flame. Though usually we avoid pain because it can be too much for us to handle, this poet portrays their pain as something we need most — we welcome its warmth into our lives because that is how we know happiness exists at all (the word “smile” appears twice in this poem).
There are so many powerful lines in this poem, but my favorite three are “Your presence causes goodness and delight to fade away,” “Like fire never learns to know the thrill of hurricanes” and “You will never know me, all you do is inflict pain.” However you choose to think about it, there is clear pain expressed throughout the words. It may be too much for us to handle, but that doesn’t mean it should be avoided at all costs. Emotions can be painful, but through them we know that life exists at all.
