Weathering Changes: A Poet for All Seasons

The Justice Poetic Newsletter, November 18, 2019

Hello Justice Poetic family and friends, community and supporters!

I am grateful you are here. I am grateful I am here. We are in this together! I know many of you are writing, reading, writing, reading and working all day, here on Medium or in one of the many other places folks are writing and reading and working. I know many of you have read some of my pieces about the changes to Medium since the MPP shifted in how it values, meaning pays, folks — we’ve gone from claps to reads and let me tell you again fam, it has been hard on the poets and short piece writers. We were not here for riches and fame, as mentioned, but it was simply such a blessing to feel valued and yes, dare I say, rewarded by the members who clapped in thank you for our work. Now it is eyes on a page that matters and eyes are not on poetry for all that long, let’s be real.

Many poets are scrambling — leave, stay, go, wait it out, write longer pieces, write less poetry, find other venues. I admit I am scrambling a bit too. Here’s some of my recent work on this scramble hustle life that is Medium and the new MPP system:

Now, this being said, I am here, I love it here, and I owe so much of my feelings of being a real poet to this place — real poet as in I write it, you read it, and a bit of life changes for us all because of something in this transaction, the words, the feelings, the new way of looking at things. I’ve been writing “longer pieces” about poetry — here are a few, I hope you have read them, slowly, LOL, or would like to read them and share them.

And now, to keep this overdue newsletter a bit simple, I want to share three of my favorite recent poems. One about my budding Buddhism that also features my love for Marilyn Monroe and poetry, the next about my love for Beauty and the Beast but also my concern for how it glorifies the emotional labor of women, and then, lastly, a love poem.

I would also like to share this — new style for me, well, okay I used to do more of these but they really have to FLOW from me, and lately, given situations, well they have started to speak to me and through me again. I have gotten a lot of nice feedback on them — sort of spoken word, sort of stream of consciousness, and sort of just a push of passionate energy and urgency of message and words that demand to be read, and one day, yes, when I am brave enough, before my next birthday, okay? I will read some of them in a place to people in public with my voice. I have to. I am ready, right? Big time poetry lady here I come!

You can find me in a lot of places but really, mostly, I am here, I am on Medium, I am talking with other poets and writers on Medium, and I am hard at work sort of branching out into Patreon and into the hopeful pre-Christmas publishing of two books of poetry, most likely on Amazon somehow. There’s a lot of pictures of my face coming up, oh dear the vanity!
