My Poetry is Fine
A Poem
No, don’t get it twisted, my poetry is fine,
she’s always been strong crawling and creeping like a vine -
I’m trying to carve out this niche and this space
for poetry to exist in any important place
I’m trying to say it doesn’t have to be high brow
or obscure, lofty or dense I’m trying to say right now, that
yes poetry can make common sense
can reach through to you, and you and you in ways that other things just cannot do
no need to argue, no need to insult poetry is not something to constantly fault
so, this is just to say, for once and for all my poetry is fine, she’s here for the masses
no matter if they are on the job or taking college classes,
my poetry, she’s fine she just needs to find
a few new places, more and more friendly faces —
(she was never here or there for fortune or for fame) —
that will feel like home and will call her by her name.
