WALKING ROUTE 66
Two Out of Three Ain’t Bad
With apologies to Marvin Lee Aday

I am not a museum buff, by any stretch of the imagination. I just don’t get it, but I am weird anyway. However, Shea’s Route 66 Roadside Museum was on my list of places to visit on this day.
Why? Because it is a museum dedicated to road trips. At least it was, when operational.
I went past it without realizing it. I had to backtrack when I realized it and understood why I missed it.
The other two things I had on the agenda for the day were to find and attend a Toastmasters club and to mail off my laptop and digital camera back to Houston. I had not used them in three weeks and didn’t seem like I would have any need for them. My phone was doing both their jobs effectively.

Noontime Toastmasters were meeting at noon(surprise, surprise) and were not too far off Route 66. Like almost every Toastmasters club, they were warm and welcoming. They were curious about me and just happened to have a member unable to fill their scheduled speaking slot.
After the meeting, two members told me that I must have been sent there just for them because they needed to hear my message at this point in their lives. It was another validation that I was living my purpose.
Greg Reynolds and Storm Wolff are two other members with whom I am still in regular contact. That’s why I am always promoting Toastmasters wherever I go.
If you have not experienced a Toastmasters club, I highly recommend that you visit the Toastmasters International Website and search for a club in your area and give them a visit. It could be a lifechanging experience for you. It certainly was for me.
Being able to send the laptop and the camera back to Houston meant fewer worries about getting them damaged or stolen, and about 15 pounds less to push all day long.
As I reflect Back
While recounting the events of my journey has been fun, I realize that it is not enough of a motivation for me to keep doing this, and I have a long way to go before I reach Santa Monica.
So I am adding this daily feature to reflect upon lessons learned and opportunities missed. Sometimes we don’t learn the lesson the first time.
Today, I can see that had I planned more thoughtfully, I wouldn’t have taken the camera and laptop with me to begin with. I tend to jump into action without adequate planning. I had to cancel another one of my cross-country walks a couple of years ago because of poor planning.
Proper Planning Prevents Poor Performance.
That’s the wisdom I was introduced to some thirty years ago that I have not applied adequately in my life, and now will be a good time to heed.
