Treat Your Life Like a Business

Learn to earn money by spending it

Not everyone must know how to run a business. But everyone wants to make money in life. Most people earn money for spending it. How about earning money by spending it?

Imagine your life as an international corporation, let’s call it Lifee. Lifee has different departments like ‘health’, ‘entertainment’, ‘education’ ‘family’. Departments have sections like ‘books’, ‘food’, ‘vacation’ etc. Every department, every section has its spendings.

As a CEO you need to cover those spendings. The company’s needs are growing, spendings are increasing each year, but income stays the same. If you were a good manager, you would ask for books and analyze them to find the opportunity to cover at least part of the spendings not from savings, but from current income. Let’s call it The Touchdown Run.

The point of Touchdown Run is to use minimum effort to maximize results. Like in football. Find that one, key solution, pass the ball, and see what happens.

I make it simple for you, there are two philosophies:

1/ Spend money where you spend time

Increase the value of life, by increasing its standards. For example, you should always invest in good shoes, or bed, because you’re spending a lot of time using these objects.

2/ Spend money where you want to spend your time

You can buy yourself a new TV, but that will encourage you to spend more time watching it. And is the way you want to spend your time, watching TV? But if you want to start a good podcast, you need to get a good microphone, and headphones, and computer.

Now, think about your life. Are you buying things to consume, or to create with them? Are you taking loans and credits to consume, or to invest? The key to living your life like running your business is to allocate time and money where you will be able to benefit the profits later. Before every purchase you should ask yourself ‘Is this is worth it?’, ‘How will I benefit from buying it?’.

Purchasing a $1,000 course at the time might be a waste of money for you. There are tonnes of different things to buy with that amount of money, right? New TV? New clothes? Sure. But if you’ll finish it, get a few job offers that require having this course and got paid in cash more than $1,000 you will think that it was a smart choice to buy this course.

I hope my comparisons to the company and football helped you got my point. Every time and money you spend on your life should be calculated, every decision thoughtful. Less effort, more results. Always imagine benefits. Take the risk sometimes. Manage your life, like a business.

Not all spendings however will be successful. Not every pass ends with catch, or earned yards. But you have all the time in the match, your life to try. And it’s better to try, than not to try and just consume and spend.

And after your pass is complete, 40, 30, 20, 10, touchdown — time to celebrate. And celebration is your good kick, extra points and motivation for another pass to complete.
