A Word from Former Netflix Addict

How to accept Netflix addiction, and how to beat it

Typical Saturday night around 9:00, your roommates are getting ready for hitting the clubs, you, however, find yourself again glued to your bed on your twelfth episode of Riverdale with a plate of pizza rolls by your side. That was me. I was paralyzed for hours every day by Netflix.

That was one of my addictions. I was a smoker, used to drink a lot, playing stupid computer games online, eating at nights, smoking pot, and getting fat.

But a year ago, when I changed my life and apply a system of new tiny habits I learned how to live my life in a healthy, creative, and productive way. After reading a book by Jake Knapp and John Zeratsky ‘Make Time’ I understood making time means stop wasting it, not adding more tasks to our todos. Netflix was taking too much of my time, so I made a choice.

A few months later I was back to M size from XXL, created 2 sources of passive income, started to work as a freelancer, started to travel, and saving money. I quit smoking, gaming, drinking. Now I’m living my dream, 6,500 miles away from home, with the girl I love.

Acceptance

Netflix is addictive, plain, and simple. I often watched Netflix simply because it was just there. After watching all seasons I was like “Could be worse”. That was all my excitement after kicking into bin 15 hours of my life.

After watching one show, Netflix suggests a hundred more. They even can skip to the next for you, so you can stay in bed. It is designed to destroy your focus and numb you into submission.

One day I opened Netflix and took a look at all the shows there. And you know what? Almost every show was the same, following the same scheme such as:

1/ Quiet small city, where everyone knows each other, terrible crime, local Sheriff trying to solve it

2/ Quiet girl in a local High School discovers her special superhero powers just in time to realize there is a war out there and she must save the world which she does after a few romances and deaths of her friends

3/ Random Heroes vs random Villains

And then I was like oh my god, seriously hundreds of shows and all are the same just with different characters or at different times? I remember the day I said enough, no more. I can’t waisting my life like that, I am not going to watch it anymore.

Moving on

I was never a fan of “new” fantasy. I love the work of people like David Weber, Tolkien, CS Lewis, Terry Pratchett, Robert E. Howard, George RR Martin, George Lucas. These people created their dimensions, invited me, and make me feel home in their worlds.

Make me feel like I care and I mourn when someone’s crushing their work (Disney’s Star Wars Parody, everything they did with the Star Wars since they own it, or Witcher on Netflix, another parody of great book series and computer games).

But this “new” fantasy? Not for me. Especially served by Netflix, boring, and the same. Best selling Netflix shows must have these three words appearing before every episode: SEX&NUDITY ; VIOLENCE ; LANGUAGE. Low culture. Very low. And recently Netflix made the decision to allow hardcore pornography on its platform. You are what you eat, so thank you.

Conclusion

Netflixation is a national epidemic just like COVID-19. It’s spreading fast and killing time of millions of people, looking brainless at their screens for the same shows. It’s cheap, attractive, and convenient for us to fall for it.

Netflix is like audio-visual diazepam. It numbs your senses and makes you forget about everything else. Netflix has become the opium of the masses. And like every other addiction it is hard to fight it, but not impossible.

What you need to do is accept your addiction, and then find a way to fight it. Try to watch it less, maybe take a break for a day, week, then for two, then for a month. Replace it with something worth the time of your life. Your only life.
