Top Writers Write With A Voice
How to let your personality shine through in your writing

One of the most important aspects of being a good writer is to find your own unique voice. Where do you find that voice? From deep, deep inside of you. It is a voice that speaks of who and what you are. It speaks of the writer's experience of life and all of it's travails. It speaks with openness, sincerity and honesty, with a generosity spirit that gives of itself, of what has passed through its life and what it has learned from all of those experiences.
It is a voice that is authentically human, vulnerable and empathetic. Above all it is a voice that is worth listening to. It can be melodious and calming, soft and soothing, or a voice that implores you to listen to what it has to say.
The following writers have found that voice within themselves and unashamedly use it here to inform, educate or just to entertain. The one thing all of these writers have in common is that they have something worthwhile saying and a very distinctive way of saying it. What shines through, more than anything, is the personality of each and every writer.
I hear the voice of Dr Mehmet Yildiz as the voice of wisdom, reason and logic. There is an enormous spirit of empathy and generosity at work here from somebody who simply wants to impart what he has learned, somebody who wants to help others to benefit from what he has learned. Somebody who delights in the learning and growth of others whom he mentors here on Illumination and elsewhere. Here Dr Yildiz offers insights into how writers can grow their visibility by virtue of writing a bio. Read on and learn.
Dew Langrial has a voice which reaches out to a writer's desire to make progress, who wants to guide you to what is possible by using the examples of other writers. But her introductions in themselves offer so much that a writer can learn from.
Jennifer Friebely is now a fellow editor who writes with such self assured confidence it is only to be admired. Who else would pretend to be god sending a letter to our new hope for a better future in Joe Biden? Like Jennifer, I feel like we are at the point of re-discovering our humanity, of ridding ourselves of a monstrous demon who is in the process of self destructing, as all none self respecting demons do in the end.We were on the precipice of the abyss of our destruction, until god stepped in to intervene to lead us to salvation. Thank god, and Jennifer.
Timothy O'Neill also speaks of god as he opens up about his very own personal dice with death.I think this is a brilliant piece of introspection and self discovery. Here is the voice of somebody who did actually fall into the abyss and by the grace of managed to climb back out to tell the tale. It is a tale well worth reading if only to learn of our own vulnerability and what slim thread lots of us hang on by.
Robert Turner offers an excellent tip on how writers can vastly improve their possibilities via the use of canonical links. Every professional writer needs all the help he or she can get to succeed and right here is one more way where you can tip the balance in your favour. Robert speaks with authority and has a way of explaining something seemingly complicated in such an easy way to understand, with good visual examples.
Jennifer M. Wilson has such a personable voice it grabbed hold of my attention from the get go. I actually felt like it was an old friend speaking to me. Here she speaks of her search for a word that will serve as her personal compass for the coming year. Her chosen word is "Onward."
"Onward means it might be slow at times and lightning-fast at others. It might take different strategies to keep going. It can pause to recoup while facing one direction. I might not even know where I’m going. The challenges ahead are unique and will need different skills to tackle. But the focus is the same: we move onward."
"Life always throws rocks of different sizes my way. Some of them, like the one I’m feeling right now while putting my heart back together, have me on my knees struggling to get back up. But when I do, there’s only one way to go: onward."
What won me over here was Adam's total honesty about what a difficult child he was....
"Like a cliche ‘coming of age’ movie, somehow the conversation found its way to my embarrassing childhood. My sister had no shame in bringing up what a difficult child I was. She’s not wrong. I was hard-headed and disagreeable."
......And how he overcame those obstacles to learning through a love of books. In defence of all good literature, I rest my case.
Casey Winans is new to me, but I so enjoyed reading about his journey through life. There is a lot to be learned from Casey's inspirational journal about his progress and how when he came to a cross-roads he learned to re-define his dream life. The dream that you once had for sure has changed since you had it, and no doubt will change again, so just learn to roll with it.
John Ross is another great writer who let's his voice shine through his writing. John speaks well about the importance of reflection and asking yourself "Why" you did a certain thing in a very particular way. There's a heck of a lot to be learned from John's contributions, but above all it's his highly personable voice that creates such an enjoyable read as well as some very useful advice.
Jennifer M Wilson
I couldn't resist adding one more from Jennifer M Wilson. What I like about this article about the daily grind of her frenetic life is it resonates with me, a lot. More than anything it is a palliative for the type of stuff I sometimes read on Linkedin about 'How I did three full time degrees, held down a full time job and brought up a nine year old girl all on my own' type of nonsense. That type of bull-crap article just serves to bolster the ego of the writer and make others feel inadequate. Jennifer, on the other hand, tells it like it really is, it's tough just bringing up a kid let alone all the other stuff. More than anything, Jennifer has got a great voice and uses it to let her personality shine through.
The link below will take you to ten other great writers who made a lasting impression upon me in December and beyond.
