Thoughts and Sentiments For ILLUMINATION’S birthday

The publication achieved more than planned in a year

Photo by Dương Trần Quốc on Unsplash

We celebrated our first anniversary yesterday.

ILLUMINATION has completed a successful year by supporting many contributing writers and by delighting thousands of discerning readers.

I shared our story at a high level yesterday.

In this post, I want to share some outstanding stories celebrating our success and providing insights to writers from multiple angles.

As Alison Tennent once said, “ILLUMINATION is not just another publication”. It is made of a group of writers and readers united for a common goal of illuminating the society.

A top writer and senior editor Dew Langrial started her remarkable story with an eye-opening statement:

“Yesterday, 529 people followed Illumination. Only 100 followed the Ascent. The total reading time is 11,958,342 minutes for Illumination. Its writers earned more than half a million dollars in its first year.”

As Dew points out we never pretend to be perfect, we deliver with a pragmatic approach. ILLUMINATION is not and never will be the New York Times. We have more important goals for our writers and readers.

Here is my comment on this masterpiece.

Some sentiments from writers and editors warmed my heart.

Our prolific writer and supportive editor Liam Ireland said:

“For me personally, Illumination means so, so much on various levels. In the past year I have grown amazingly as a writer and author thanks to Illumination. What I have achieved is truly astounding. Apart from developing my very own style of writing and brand of personality, my journey has been punctuated by quite a few milestones and along the way. I have become a top writer and author for no less than seven publications and an editor for five. I have also managed to write and publish eleven books of short stories and poetry. In addition, I have managed to learn how to build a website and have six up and running. However, this is not quite the full story.”

A humorist and our proactive editor Terry L. Cooper concluded with a fascinating comment:

“So on Illumination’s first birthday I say: happy birthday, Illumination. Your birth has given me life.”

Spiritual and poetic words of Geetika Sethi showed us the light.

So in his blessed hands, ILLUMINATION is growing day by day. It won’t divide and not get divided either. Rather it has spread its wings and taught all its followers to fly, fly as high as one wishes only because he is the wind beneath our wings.

Dr. Preeti Singh opened her insightful story with these beautiful words:

Why this story? So many people have written about Illumination. I would like to celebrate with Champagne! with the person who gave birth and bore the labor pains of Illumination to all of us editors, writers, and readers.

Our new editor Noorain Hassan, BMS asked a question and elaborated on it.

What makes Illumination special? It’s you…really you. Readers and writers make our Illumination special. (Can’t leave behind editors, too. ) Here’s the thing: Illumination came from a competitive background where it falls on its knees, woke upright, and tried again; it means you have a chance too. If you are one of those writers who think “writing” has no worth it… ask ILLUMINATION. So from next time you think writing has no worth, imagine Illumination. You’ll be like: Taadaaa… hope’s arrived. When there’s no one…Illumination is.

One the first writers of our publication Desiree Driesenaar who also helped us with editing added clarity on our success focusing on our core values.

Illumination is very inclusive and has the aim to make all of us successful without feeling any competition. Our motto is Diversity, Synergy, Fusion, and Serendipity. The more quality we show on the Medium platform in general, the more all publications recognize our value. So, now I have it all. A home. A fine, warm group of friends and an ever-growing audience for my writing. I’m a writer with solid wings now! And if you wonder what the secret of our success is? It’s very simple. Anyone can copy our success. Because we all have one element in common: we enjoy human connection. Honest connection. Conversations with many other writers and readers on this and other social media platforms.

Our curation expert and supportive editor The Maverick Files touched critical success factors reflecting our culture and capability.

I was no star writer but clearly, Dr. Yildiz saw something there and was humble enough to make an offer. He was clear that I didn’t have any obligation to join or to a certain “time commitment” — it was truly voluntary. And so I joined the crew. I had only seen these names as writers and editors of Illumination before, and had been in awe of the work they do — and here I was, a noob, right in the middle of the action. Britni Pepper — the seductress who knew how to draw her readers into a surreal world of story-telling, Tree Langdon — the poetess who had her poems curated more often than I’ve seen any other writer, Dew Langrial, the queen of editing and skillful writing, and of course the “true” maverick himself — Dr Mehmet Yildiz. The best part? The most humble, helpful, and collaborative group ever. And that Slack workspace? Like a candy store for a kid who wants to network and learn from fellow writers. Thousands of writers — established authors, up-and-coming stars, and noobs like myself. You name a “type” of a writer and a “genre” and I’ll be sure to find you a match in that group.

Our musically gifted editor Agnes Laurens shared her sentiments in the editorial room.

The moment I came into the editorial room, was crazy, in a humorous, positive way, with lots of fun, jokes, seriousness, and so much more I can’t even express myself right now. What a blessing! This is why I write: for those people enjoying my words, my sentences, and my stories, just to be entertained and inspired. I am eternally grateful for this fantastic opportunity, which gives me the journey that teaches me lessons, and not being fear for things that I was afraid of showing my voice. ILLUMINATION: Up to a million more years, until the world dies.

Here is a beautiful poem from master poet Gurpreet Dhariwal who touched hearts of many readers.

Another beautiful poem from our new and talented editor Claire Kelly.

And a breathtaking tanka from Marcus

Let me conclude my story with some comments on my story. These comments meant a lot to me. I appreciate lovely thoughts and effort to comment.

I am grateful for these beautiful and meaningful comments.

As a surprise I introduced a new baby born on ILLUMINATION’s anniversary.

I hope it will be as successful as ILLUMINATION within a year. Time will show.

Many writers are already excited to participate in this new initiative.

I hope you enjoy these pieces as much as I enjoyed them.

Thank you for your support.
