Summary

The article emphasizes the importance of video content in personal branding and digital marketing for 2021, highlighting its ease of creation, authenticity, and effectiveness in communication.

Abstract

The author argues that videos will be a crucial tool for personal branding and digital marketing in 2021. This is due to their ease of production, which requires less energy than typing, and their ability to convey authenticity, making it difficult for others to plagiarize content. Videos also minimize friction in communication by providing a direct and personal presentation of the creator. The article suggests that the shift towards video content is a response to the oversaturation of copied and duplicated social media posts, and it encourages creators to overcome the fear of visibility that comes with putting themselves in front of the camera.

Opinions

  • Typing and structuring thoughts into coherent sentences is more time-consuming than shooting a video.
  • The ease of copying and pasting text on social media has led to widespread content plagiarism, which videos can help prevent.
  • Videos provide a more authentic and personal representation of individuals, which is beneficial for personal branding.
  • The unique nature of an individual's appearance, voice, and mannerisms in videos acts as a deterrent against unauthorized replication.
  • Video content is seen as a way to circumvent the limitations of text-based communication, offering a richer and more engaging experience for audiences.
  • The author believes that overcoming the fear of being on camera is essential for leveraging the full potential of video in personal branding and digital marketing efforts.

This Is Why Videos Are Important For 2021.

Ease of use, an exhibition of authenticity, and 1-tap circulation drive the purpose of using videos to connect compared to texts or blogs. As the Digital Age continues to mature, videos will be an indispensable tool for Personal Branding and Digital Marketing.

Videos work, in most part because it showcases us. It sounds weird to say this, but in the World of massive social media post duplication, this might be the way out.

I started my active Linkedin journey in 2019. I jumped in when the platform is like a hot potato. Everyone felt that FaceBook is going down, and Linkedin is up and coming. You know, attention transfer.

People will always try to find ways to build their follower base for subsequent monetization. Newcomers in a mature platform has the cards stacked against them. They either scout for new platforms, or they start copying content that is proven to be successful (read: viral).

Copy, paste, and publish was the way to viral success.

2019 leading to 2020 was the Golden era of massive Linkedin content plagiarism. Such contents include: -

  1. Let’s Connect — Whatever that means.
  2. Celebrating “X” Number of Followers — Whatever that means.
  3. Know Your Why — Whatever that means.

The point is, they are way overdone.

Social media posts are interesting because they can be copied at ease. Double-tap on one of the sentences, and we can drag the highlight across the entire text. Select the “Copy” function. Go to the “New Post” feature. “Paste” the content. Change the hashtag.

Done. As good as new. Rinse, wash, repeat until the clothes wear off.

That means it will continue until engagement crashes.

That is why I think videos are going to be big in 2021. There are 3 reasons to support that, on top of what I have mentioned above.

1. Shooting A Video Uses Less Energy Than Typing.

Surprising, but true. And the tools are present at our disposal. Our smart devices allow for native recording. YouTube and Instagram allow us to Go-Live when we feel like it.

When we type our thoughts, we need to translate what we are thinking (this is seamless and fast) into sentence structuring that makes sense (this takes a lot of time).

From this perspective, videos are fast to produce. And they save time.

2. Shooting A Video Prevents Massive Plagiarism.

Sure, they can copy what we say. They can copy the entire video and circulate it blindly.

The thing is.

Our faces are all over the video. Content “copy” professionals cannot remove our faces. Our intonation and accents are different. It is different for a German to pass off as a Singaporean.

It is possible with a lot of effort.

And hard work is the ultimate firewall preventing those seeking the easy way out from cashing out from our efforts.

3. Shooting A Video Minimises Friction In Communication.

A video is a snapshot presentation of who we are and how we think.

This is a YouTube video I shot to promote a Year-End Live Stream program where my fellow Co-Founders and I will explore our journey from our “Yesterday” and “Today” segments, leading towards the “Tomorrow” we see.

Videos get closest to who we are in terms of persona presentation. Some say Personal Branding. We get what we see and hear. This is wildly different from text messages, where the receiver could inject their current day emotions into the interpretation process.

In Parting.

I believe that videos are the way to go for 2021. There are many reasons to support that.

Most importantly, we also have to overcome to fear of putting ourselves out there. Texts and chats can only go so far before friction in communication applies.

Videos, in that sense, circumvent that issue.

Happy Shooting!
