Do You Think Claps And Responses Matter? I Do. Here’s Why.
Claps and responses motivate the writer. They spur your favorite writers to push harder and write better stories. Beyond that, claps and responses do have their place. This is my perspective.

I envision myself standing on a big stage, delivering my ground-breaking speech about saving the World, and receive a standing ovation. I mean, 50 claps alone don’t mean anything. However, 5 million people giving me 50 claps each? Man, what a feat!
And imagine the responses that come along.
“What a brilliant speaker!”.
“He blew my mind!”.
I suspect that my feet will be off the ground, and I may start floating from one cafeteria to another for the next few days.
Okay, now the truth.
There are claps and responses featured in every story I publish on Medium. I probably didn’t get the standing ovation and fan’s responses that I want in terms of volume. I admit, there is much to be done. I have to keep polishing my future work.
Then, I started wondering. What are the claps and responses designed for, if not social validation?
I started paying deliberate attention to these features when I am reading stories on Medium. I have this habit of maximizing the number of claps I can give to the stories I read, based on effort and great mind-poking. Yes, I know how difficult it is to get a Masterpiece published.
I decided to experiment this afternoon.
I activated the stop-watch feature on my smartphone and starting counting the number of seconds it takes to give out 50 claps. I did that for 3 stories at maximum speed. I recorded 15.32 seconds on average. Hmm.

I got curious. I headed for lunch and when I got back, I wondered how long it takes to write one response to a story.
Then I recorded the time taken to write a response to one of the stories I read. This is what I wrote.
“I agree, Liam Ireland. We are still the thinking machines that cannot be replaced (for now).”
It took me 15.53 seconds after edits due to 1 spelling error.
I remembered thinking this to myself.
“Wow. It all adds up.”.
Then I started doing a simple calculus using the Second-Degree Differentiation to analyze the impact of maximum claps and responses have on my published stories. This is my maths.
5-minute story + 50 claps from 1 reader + 1 15-word response from my reader = 5 minutes + 15.32 seconds + 15.53 seconds = 5 minutes, 30.85 seconds.
The impact of a well-written story has a long tail-end effect on my earnings because it takes time to clap and respond. Plus, readers have to stay on my story page to do that.
That maths above is for 1 reader. If there are 10?
Applying the 2nd Law of Thermal Dynamics into my thinking (I am BS-ing again), the tail-end effect would be 30.85 seconds multiplied by 10, which gives me 308.5 seconds. That is an equivalent of 5 minutes and 8 seconds.
That means I have cloned another story based on the time required to write, without actually having to write one.
Holy cow! I just found the secret formula to financial freedom via Medium!
Okay, that was a light-hearted note. However, this tail-end effect that comes as a result of a good story is no joke. This is the compounded interest formula of good writing.
That means writing good stories pays dividends, literally. The longer our stories stay alive, the longer it will continue to find an audience for us. We get to benefit from the compounded dividend effect.
This isn’t about abstract calculus. This is a matter of earnings as a writer.
I believe that claps and responses do have a place in terms of features. Indeed, they do not contribute to our direct monetization efforts the way stories do.
But.
What they do is to provide the compounded dividend effect.
Those are the real long-term dividends.
Don’t you think so?
Now. This story is coming to an end. Thank you for reading.
Please clap 50 times and write me a response!
