These Signs Say You Could Be a Writer

What signs say you are headed for a writing career?

For me, being a writer started when I was small and I regularly wrote stories and radio plays. I have always aspired to be a writer. Now that I have more freedom, I am now pursuing writing with a lot of passion. If you landed on Medium and are pondering a writing career, this is the perfect place to write.

What makes you want to be a writer? Consider some ideas here.

1. You Are Passionate About Writing.

Did you write as a child and also volunteered for the school and college newspaper?

Did you keep a diary as a child? Did you ever feel bad about majoring in business communications, when you really wanted to take a major in writing?

If you take to writing like fish to water, then writing may be the best career or hobby for you.

I don’t know about you, but I never drink when I write.

Having a love affair with writing is definitely not the same as spending the evening with a romantic partner. Your love affair with writing may be strictly business or pleasure. Depending upon your niche, your passion for writing could lead to niches in romance, science fiction, technology, or children’s books.

2. You Want To Tell Your Story

If that is you, Medium is the perfect place to write articles about the subject of your choosing. During my time here, I’ve written about a wide range of topics including:

  • seeing a UFO
  • working as a school crossing guard
  • writing about the creative process
  • writing about other side-gigs

If you have stories to tell about an interesting childhood or a person, you can fulfill that dream by writing about it.

Writing about the history of your city and how your ancestors came to the city is something that is of local and historic value.

Do you have a burning desire to tell your Grandfather’s story of hardship, endurance, hard work, and eventual success in America?

You may also have this need to write about the past so that you can face the future stronger. Whatever your reason, your desire to write is strong, and you feel this urge to write down your thoughts and your experiences.

3. You Have Great Ideas For A Novel

You love Stephen King books and feel that you have the seeds of another great novel. Or you always seem to come up with stories that are waiting to be released in a book or short story form.

Novelists love to read and if you feel you can pen the next exciting romance or fantasy novel, now is the time to begin.

But when I was growing up, we didn’t have so many publishing options. I had to send out submissions to publishers and wait for their replies. Who needs to wait for a reply now, thanks to self-publishing platforms like Kindle.

If your mind is waiting to unleash the next great short story, then you may have the mindset to be a fiction writer! It’s a good sign!

4. If Poetry Is Your Thing, Now’s The Time To Begin

Poetry has evolved so much since the days of Shakespeare and William Blake. You can experiment with traditional styles of poetry, or take on new forms.

I once attended a show by a local slam poet, and his words brought me to tears. This poet, Shane Koyczan, has been described as “Canada’s best known spoken word poet” and his poetry is autobiographical and often moving.

Poetry is no longer relegated to creative writing classes, and it’s making a comeback by way of slam poets like Shane, who is embarking on a Canadian tour.

The poetry niche is big on Tiktok and some Tiktokers have over 1 million followers like Christi Steyn.

If you are secretly writing poetry in a math class, writing verses on the bus, or posting poems on Tiktok, this writing lifestyle may be for you.

5. You Can’t Imagine A Life Without Writing

For you, writing is a passion. It’s an everyday routine that you need to do, and if somehow you miss a day of writing, you regret it.

Have you ever done this recently?

  • daydream about writing while talking to your friends or family?
  • think about your writing project while in a business meeting, or in a conference?
  • look at your Medium app on the bus or on the plane?
  • at a restaurant with friends or family members and can’t stop thinking about your next writing project?
  • read your Medium story to your friends or family members (to get feedback)?
  • turn down watching hockey or some other movie with the family to write?
  • tell your dog that you are busy now, and will walk him later after you finish your article?
  • forgetting to eat your favorite dessert because you are busy writing?

If you have done this, these are clear signs that you have the desire to be a writer!

Keep in mind that being a good writer (and getting a solid fan base, or you can write for your own enjoyment) may take some time to learn the tools of this amazing trade.

But it’s time well spent.
