5 Ways To Get Money (Even If You Can’t Get In The Medium Partner Program)

Tips can help you get paid for your writing

Updated: Oct 10 2023

As of this writing, some writers are posting that they are not eligible to make money via Medium’s payment Stripe program. This is rather unfortunate and I urge writers to remain patient, and I am sure the program will expand soon to lots of countries. In the meantime, try these tips to make money!

When I first started Medium last year, I quickly got 100 followers and was then eligible to start earning money on its paid platform. When you get 100 followers, you can apply to be part of the Medium Partner Program.

This article hopes to give some writers the option to earn money for their articles. Many years ago, there used to be a limited number of crowdfunding sites. But today, there are many options — good news for writers all over the world.

Yes, you can ask for tips! Tips are a powerful motivational tool to assist new and emerging writers who don’t qualify for Medium’s partner program.

There are many websites that offer options for readers to tip in the form of creative ways, such as buying the writer a coffee by way of a payment via a link at the end of the article.

Writers who are seeking tips on a regular basis are encouraged to have a consistent body of work to tell their readers that they are serious writers, and are aiming to provide quality work.

I have searched the Internet to help writers benefit from a few crowdfunding sites. I recommend that you research these sites and found the site that is suitable for you.

Here are some sites for you to consider and start using:

Buy Me A Coffee is a site that advertises as a “free, fast and friendly way to accept donations.” The site is easy to use and has several payment methods, including Paypal and Stripe.

You can also write a customized message to readers thanking them for their support. The site offers a way to get recurring income from readers by enabling a membership option. You can copy your URL link to your Medium article. I have personally used this site and found the interface very easy to use, and I have noticed this being used by other Medium writers.

This site is perfect for writers, creators, musicians, developers, podcasters, and community organizations. Check it out here.

2. Ko-fi

This site is also a crowdfunding site for creators to use. I have seen several Medium writers use this platform to request tips. Sign-up is free and it’s billed as the “friendly way to earn an income from fans of your work.”

Ko-fi has a newsletter that contains useful tips for its creators. Check it out here: https://ko-fi.com/supportkofi/posts

3. Tipee

This is another site for creators, and writers who can get support from their readers. I took a look at the first page of the site and it’s got many testimonials from creators who have received a steady income of tips.

Tipee is advertised for “all content creators” and if you have a Tiktok video or other creative works, take a look at this site here.

4. Liberapay

Donors can also use this site to support creators who contribute to the common good. This site seems targeted at creators who create free software, free knowledge, or free art to help the world.

If you have uploaded pictures to free sites and haven’t seen a penny, this site may be for you. If you are currently writing for free on Medium, this site is worth checking out. See it here.

5. Patreon

Back in the good old days of the Renaissance, many artists received a patron or a wealthy person that helped them support their art and encourage their creativity.

Enter Patreon, a modern-day way where creators can get paid for their work by people who love what they are doing.

The site lists creators that include:

  • podcasters
  • journalists
  • writers
  • nonprofits
  • local businesses
  • creators-of-all-kinds

The site says it has thousands of creators who are earning an income from donors. It’s worth checking out here.

Conclusion:

One final tip: start a personal website and add your articles there, and try to get income via Google adsense. Reposting your articles on your own site may also give you bigger exposure… and that’s a good thing.

If you are not eligible to make money via the Medium Partner program, try adding a blurb at the end of your article, asking readers to tip you for your article.

That’s all today.

If you are new to Medium, please join here, and support writers like me who want to make it as a writer. By joining today, you can also start a great side gig and make money as a writer, too! New! Another way you can show support is if you can buy me a coffee here. (Many thanks in advance.)
